Them taking a character that's a strong, independent, and capable young female, and turning her into just another Bratz-doll wannabe is worse than if they'd just made a new character from scratch for the pre-teen set.

It's sending the message that this is what girls are expected to grow up into: that, even an "explorer" and adventurer is supposed to magically morph into a "prettied"-up superficial fashion-focused middle-school dweller just because she's a girl and happens to be approaching early adolescence: that she's supposed to trade in her entire previous identity and sense of self.

Disappointing.

Plus, if Mattel thinks that "updating" Dora in such a way will suddenly make a pre-school icon popular with the pre-teen demographic, I think they're probably quite mistaken.

I have two childeren of my own and my youngest loves dora and ny oldest isnt that in to her shes more into icarly and hannah montana.anyways she was watching the news last night with my mom and heard "dora gets a makover" then of corse went straight to the computer and googled it. forcing my youngest and i to look what was about to pop up on the screen. my youngest started crying and if the new dora is going to make kids that are big fans cry i dont think she should change.

When the "NEW" Dora the Explorer doll is released this fall, if you don't like it and think it's a bad "example" then don't purchase it for your kids. However, none of us can keep our kids from growing up... they are all eventually going to be introduced to things we don't want them to be, some kindergarteners are introduced to stuff way worse than lipgloss and cellphones... a doll that still nurtures the curiosity our tween children have with growing up right along with them, isn't the worst idea out there.

I just want to say that I am not an adult but I think that you all are making a big deal about dora's new look. Some are also being negative thinking that your kids are going to dress up as skanks when dora is just one nice character that is not even real if you do not want your kids dressing like the new dora do not let them. Let them decide when they are adults... they would probaly grow out of that.  Just because I see dora's new look dosent mean I want to dress or be exactly like dora. People have never spoken about how the brat dolls look which is more worst than what dora has on. If you are disgusted with dora's look give your kids examples not to make them dress up in a way you are disgusted by. SIMPLE. you can not think dora is a bad example for kids because of one mistake it has been the very first mistake they have done so far. This comment was not made to be rude or imature. :)

So I'm watching the news right now and there are moms saying the new Dora is too sexy?!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME?  i just about fell of my couch laughing at these pathetic, have nothing better to do with my time, "mommys."  The picture showed a cute dress with leggings....in fact looks very similar to what my 2 year old daughter is wearing today.  OH but it looks cute on a 2 year old!!  nevermind the fact that the preschool Dora picture above has her showing her mid-driff.  

This is pathetic.  If you don't like it don't buy it and instead of sitting your kids in front of a television and let the TV be your babysitter, try spending time with your kids.  take them to parks.  I am a stay home mom and me and my daughter go to the park everyday, we have picnics in our backyard, we read books and play with toys.  

What do you think you're teaching your kids by the way you are acting?  

Get over it and spend your time doing something constructive.

Why is everybody making such a big deal out of this? If your child is dressing just because that's how Dora dresses, then I'm sorry, but there is something wrong with your kid. Next, they'll be watching shows like Rock of Love and think, oh I need to dress like them. No. Calm down, and if you child IS thinking that, then maybe you should just tell them; "honey, Dora has grown up a bit okay? She is wearing big girl clothes, and does big girl stuff. You can do that when your a little older too, but right now, your a little too young." Come on people, your acting like The Plague just hit the universe.

I think this is all a marketing ply. I have a daughter who is almost 11 and she says she most likely WILL NOT even watch the new Dora. "Dora is for little kids."

It is funny how all of a sudden Dora went from 6 years old to 11 yrs old, all in a matter of months. Kids everywhere are influenced by what they see on TV, magazines, movies and posters...are all our kids going to turn out to look like Bratz and the new Dora? Ok Dora isn't over slutty like Bratz, but I say...leave Dora for the little kids and make a whole new Tween show!

The truth of the matter is that over time our society and ourselves change. Things change and we have to adjust to these changes. This doesn't mean that we should follow these changes. Only when it is necessary should we adjust, for example a new job or a new home. The truth is that the world is polluted with images and ideologies about how humans should dress, act, what we should eat, what jobs are better and etc, there's a whole list, but if we become completely and sorely involved into these ideologies are we truly ourselves or just something that society makes us. If we teach our children that YES, there are going to be these bad influences and ideas out there and maybe we may fall into them at times in the end what matters is the advice and moral/ethnical values parents give to their children. I am a first year in college now... it is not until now that I am becoming more aware of society and its influences. But what always remains with me is all the advice my mother gave me and how I was brought up. So as parents one should really spend time with your children and talk to them. Don't let society or the media do it for you.

At the ages 3-7, i thought dora was the best thing since ice-cream. she was my hero. she encouraged me to do new things but now its all different. the only the "improved" dora is encouraging little girls to do is run around like a little whore and let men lift up your skirt. someone needs to sue

okay this show was made for little kids not for freaken grown ups so i think this is areeally bad idea but then again little kids can learn more by watching Dora do other rather than the things she use to do , which i think its good for kids brains to developed more faster to be smarter. obviously this is a kid show so theu wont be putting unappropriate things in there. its for kids . just getting all mand about it

ok so yes dora is getting changed but i dont find an absolutely horrible thing- evrything grows up now i dont want dora to look like a slut but still things are going to change with the world. since dora is an explorer than she should wear cute jeans that fit nicely with her body but not too tight. a cute tank top that fits close but not to where you can see her cleavage-if she has one.

This is shit! I think Dora is so cute when she was little but even cuter now! Dora is not sexier...she's just older. Is there a problem with growing older? uh..no! It's perfectly fine and Dora will be nothing like the Bratz... Nickelodeon will never do that.

OK I have 2 little cousins under 5 years old and although the oldest loves dora and little one in just getting into watching, I dont think a make over is that big of a deal.  everyone is acting like its the worst thing in the world and how could they possibly change dora.  Your life is not ruined..and if it is thats sad because its a CARTOON, how can a cartoon influence your life that much?  To the person who said that the next episode will be about STDs, you have to be completely out of your mind.  Its nickelodeon, nick jr for tat matter, they would never put that influence on kids.  There are honestly so much worse things out there for a child to see than dora in a cute little dress (that goes to her KNEES) and leggings.  Children may be influenced by what they see on TV, however they are more influenced by what they see in real life.  Therefore if they have a person they look up to thats older, such as an older sister, they will want to be like THEM not dora.  Changing dora is probably an attempt to get an older demographic watching.  Its honestly not that big of a deal.

I think you are more afraid of your own children growing up than you are of dora and this whole make over thing is where it will all begin.  You can fight it all you want but you cant keep your kids in 4-year old clothes forever, they are going to want to grow up whether you like it or not.  Stop complaining, you are making way to big of a deal out of this.

I'm a dad of two beautiful little angels (Hackensack NJ, formerly from NYC).  My oldest (5) grew up on Dora...the character was and is a Godsend for little girls (from the aspects of learning and the clothing lines especially, made it so easy to shop for her from head to toe)...she learned so much and I must say it was great to see an ethnic character with such worldwide recognition and moreso acceptance from parents and children from all walks of life.  However, recently as her younger sister (17 months) began recognizing the character (saying her name, singing the song which helps to stimulate her verbal skills) her older sis said, Daddy, Dora's for little girls, please get me a Barbie jeep instead of the Dora one you promised.  (Interestingly enough...are you guys familiar with the origins of Barbie (chuckle, chuckle)).  Anyway, getting to the point:  it would be great to see Dora a bit older (tweens) teaching and guiding little girls down the right path...carrying on the learning tradition currently established by the current Dora.  I'm sure the creators have and will do their homework...they would be insane to incorporate anything improper and not age and morally appropriate.  To neigh sayers...calm down...give it a chance and then react.  Or as your tween daughters may say, "Mom/Dad, chill out" (or whatever new term their using these days).
