A grieving Liam Neeson gathered with family, friends and loved ones on Friday afternoon for a wake for his wife Natasha Richardson. The private viewing took place at the American Irish Historical Society on Manhattan's Upper Side two days after Richardson's tragic death following a ski accident in Canada.
The service was presumed to be the "traditional Irish wake" that Neeson had spoken of the night before, when he had attended the Broadway tribute to his late wife.
Besides Neeson and his two sons Michael and Daniel, Richardson's mother Vanessa Redgrave and sister, Joely Richardson also attended.
Other mourners included Diane Sawyer, Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman, Lauren Bacall, Howard Stern, Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, Matthew Modine and Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Mathilde Krim, a longtime Richardson friend and founding chairman of the AIDS research organization amfAR, described the wake as "very respectful." Krim tearfully told People magazine that Richardson, looked "beautiful, incredibly beautiful" in her casket.
According to reports, the family was planning to bury Richardson during a private funeral service in Millbrook, NY, where she belonged to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church.
