Gwyneth Paltrow: Shampoo Is Harming Our Kids

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow's Web site Goop is causing a lot of controversy.  The 36-year-old mom-of-two is now saying that shampoo is harming our children - causing cancer and other serious ailments.  Do you think she's right?

Paltrow writes that there is a link between the chemicals found in household products, including shampoo, that can be dangerous to our children.

She writes:

"Fetuses, infants and toddlers are basically unable to metabolize toxins the way that adults are, and we are constantly filling our environments with chemicals that may or may not be safe," Paltrow writes. "The research is troubling; the incidence of diseases in children such as asthma, cancer and autism have shot up exponentially and many children we all know and love have been diagnosed with developmental issues like ADHD [Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder]."

However, not everyone agrees with her, including Professor Hugh Pennington, leading bacteriologist, who advices Britain's Food Standards Agency.  He said, "It's a load of nonsense. Shampoo is perfectly safe, unless you drink it in large quantities...It does annoy me when celebrities use their position to spout nonsense. They have a perfect right to their views, even if they are loopy, but they do hold a position of influence."

Do you think there is any validity to what Gwyneth is saying?  Do you use shampoo to wash your children's hair,or do you believe it's as harmful as household cleaning products?

Just buy the all-natural stuff like California Baby or Burt's Bees, and don't worry.

ugh, the study that came out a couple of weeks ago that many kids shampoos had carcinogens has been debunked by so many scientists - there is simply not enough of these chemicals to make any difference.

Yes, but the skin is the body's largest organ so even if you're washing the chemicals off, the baby (and us) still has contact.  My position is why even take the risk?

I think she may be going a little overboard but there are parabens and other chemicals in our health and beauty products that we have learned are not the best for our kids. It is easy to avoid them without having to shop at specialty stores and they don't even cost that much more. In fact Suave kid's shampoo does not have parabens and it is cheaper than Loreal, Huggies Baby Wash and Johnson's and Johnson's that all do. We have a responsibility to take care of our kids. We can ignore and debunk the latest research or we can take small steps to keep them safe from things we don't know everything about.

It may be too small an amount to do any harm, but once you add up all the products we use with a small amount each, it adds up to a large amount.  That's what the government scientists never take into account when they defend businesses who want us to stop worrying and keep buying.

It has been documented that the baby shampoos have some source of chemicals that can be toxic for young children.  It's just something that's not advertised openly to the American public and what they don't know won't hurt them...or so it's thought.

All natural does not equate to safe.

Arsenic is all natural, but it will still kill you if you ingest enough.

pthallates (artificial fragrances) should be avoided, but are in a lot of baby and kid soaps.

Read about it in the Wall Street Journal years ago; the chemicals are hard to avoid, however.

I agree with her, there is a rise in health problems in children. Its not worth the risk, not when there are safer alternatives. I mean its your babies life and health at risk. No joking matter. It might sound crazy but I wont take the risk I like Natures Paradise Organics products. They are safe and effective. Without making our hair greasy. I dont believe in NO shampoo, just better shampoo.
