John Travolta and Kelly Preston recently celebrated daughter Ella Bleu's 9th birthday, and although they threw her a party "just as they would any other year," says a friend, it was also marked with a touch of sadness - the family is still grieving the loss of Jett, who died Jan 2.
The Travoltas are trying to make their way after the devastating death of their son Jett, who died in the Bahamas from a seizure. They've stayed out of the spotlight and have kept a low profile in their hometown of Ocala, Fla.
Actress and singer Olivia Newton-John, a long-time friend of John's, said, "John is a strong man, but we want to leave him in peace. To lose a loved one - it's the worst time in anyone's life."
However, John and Kelly are slowly making a new normal for their family since Jett's passing. "They aren't secluding themselves or paralyzed. [Seeing them] was like old times. Nothing awkward and no topics to dance around. There were smiles," said a friend, who recently visited with them.
John and Kelly are using their strong faith in Scientology beliefs to help get them through this most difficult time.
Another pal said, "They're relying on their faith to get them through this. Their faith is solid, and their family is solid.
Actress Leah Remini, who is also a Scientology follower, adds, "How do you deal with the greatest tragedy in your life? I can tell you that they are handling it the best any parent could ever deal."
Jett would have turned 17 on April 13.
