Madonna Will Appeal Adoption Ruling May 4th

Madonna, Lourdes, and David

Still reeling from her failed attempt to adopt Mercy James in early April -- and being thrown from a horse on Saturday -- Madonna will saddle up for round two in the battle for Mercy next month, her lawyer said today.

The Queen of Pop will take her case before Malawi's supreme court on May 4th to formally appeal the high court's previous ruling. That ruling denied Madonna the adoption of Mercy because, apparently, you must be a citizen of Malawi to adopt a Malawian child. However, that didn't stop her from adopting 13-month-old David Banda in 2006.

Unfortunately for Madonna, the ruling seems pretty cut and dry, but her lawyers say they've got clear grounds for an appeal. What's the angle? Other than Madonna becoming a citizen of Malawi, I'm really curious as to how they'll pull this off.

After her first adoption, there was backlash from people who claimed that Madonna got special privileges because she's a US citizen and a ginormous pop star. Now, the supreme court has to decide between the well-being of Mercy James, and creating the appearance that the law applies to extremely rich people like Madonna -- which it usually doesn't.
