Ricki Lake's Book On Childbirth Hits The Shelves

Posted by Josh loposer

Since the birth of her second son, Ricki Lake has been on a mission to educate and empower expectant mothers of alternative ways to give birth. This week, her book Your Best Birth has hit shelves. Will it start a revolution?

Midwives, home births, etc. are seen by many as semi-dangerous hippie trends, but Ricki sees it the other way around. She says that many of the thinks that many common medical practices may be doing new mothers more harm than good. That's apparently the reason Ricki and her producer/co-author Abbey Epstein have gotten on their soap box.

According to them, 99% of births in the US occur in hospitals, though the vast majority are not high risk. In Lake's opinion, once you step into a hospital, you lose almost all control over the process of childbirth. Ricki went home birth for her second child because she wanted control over the mood lighting, the tunes, and even the menu.

"I didn't want to be somewhere where I could only have ice chips."

What do you think about Ricki's encouraging women to try midwives and home birth? Is she the Jenny McCarthy of childbirth?

it's awesome! it's good to know your options regardless of where you decide to birth.  it's all about making informed decisions, not just trusting that your care provider is doing right by you.  also, it's not just a soap box: this is a movement towards making maternity care more mother and baby friendly so that you can go to a hospital and birth without all the interventions or stay at home and have access to quality care. women and their families should want to know what's out there as far as birht options go.

Absolutely, Audrey. Just look at statistics from the Netherlands. As quoted in Rikki's doco "The Business of Being Born", there are less babies and mothers dying in childbirth there than in the U.S.A. and 30% of births are midwife assisted births at home.

We lived in Amsterdam for a few years and nearly had our baby there. I was terrified at ending up pregnant in a more "American" health system. So I really sought out a good childbirth class and thought about what I wanted. In the end, I had a great birth experience in a hospital with my husband and a doula. I think going into the process with information, support and opinions helped increase the chance of me having the kind of experience I wanted. (I know there's an element of luck, but I also believe the mother's positive attitude going into labour can make a big difference to the outcome). In the end my OB/GYN and the hospital staff were great and very "hands-off", trusting me and my body, just as I wanted.
