Move over Susan Boyle - there's another controversy on Britain's Got Talent. Hollie Steel, the 10-year-old sensation on this season's show, burst into tears in the middle of her performance last night during the show's semi-final round. And the questions on everyone's lips are: Was the breakdown staged? Is her mother pushing her too hard? Should Simon Cowell break out and wear some other colors besides black?
Maybe, yes, and yes.
Watch the video and judge for yourself:
While the blogosphere is buzzing with talk that Steel's breakdown was staged to garner a 'sympathy vote' in the competition, I'm not completely convinced. If it wasn't fake and she did meltdown on stage, it's obvious she's being pushed too hard, by her mom and others around her. And why the mother even let her stay on stage if she was so obviously upset? That would have been a clear sign that it was time to whisk the kid backstage and let her chill out with a juice box and big bag of Doritos, just like a normal kid.
And if it was staged, that brings up even more disturbing issues. What kind of horrible parent would actually coach her kid into faking a breakdown in order to win a contest?
I'll keep you posted. I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see of Hollie Steel. Or Simon's monochromatic wardrobe.
