Turn Out The Lights And Do It In The Dark

Nelly Furtado is going to. In front of thousands of people. Tonight's the night.

You can do it, too.

Tonight at 8pm it will be Earth Hour - an hour during which everyone on the planet will be asked to turn off their lights, please - and Nelly Furtado - who is, in addition to being Canada's favorite semi-skanky pop singer cum single mother, is our ambassador for Earth Hour (not as cool a gig as Angie's humanitarian biz for the UN, but still, you gotta start somewhere) - is going to kick off the hour with a free! concert! in Toronto. ("Turn Out The Lights"? GET IT?)

The partners of Toronto’s Earth Hour today announced that multi-platinum Grammy and Juno Award-winner, and Canada’s own, Nelly Furtado will join Earth Hour as the first Canadian Earth Hour Ambassador. She will also perform a free concert at Nathan Phillips Square on March 29 to celebrate Earth Hour.

As an Earth Hour Ambassador and an advocate for the environment, Nelly Furtado will play an unplugged concert at the Earth Hour community event, starting at 7:30 p.m. The organizers are taking steps to make the event as carbon-neutral as possible - including powering the event with green, renewable energy from Bullfrog Power. People from across the GTA are invited to attend.

That's awesome that they're making it carbon-neutral and unplugged and all, but I still don't get how it's going to be a particularly effective concert with all the lights out. I mean, will there be candles? Isn't that a fire hazard? Or will Nelly just light everything up with the glow of her own fabulousness?

Whatever. Do it for the children.

Dean McDermott, STILL Not Father Of The Year

Surfing is a notch or two above father-son two-legged races, but it's still not going to garner Dean McDermott any Father-Of-The-Year awards. How do you explain to your son that although you loved and cherished his mother lo the many years of his adolescent life, you didn't love her - or him, or his new little sister - enough to keep your grubby paws off of the first piece of tinsel-dusted Hollywood ass that shook itself in your direction?

That's what I thought. I'm guessing that's why his little boy's crying, right there, in that photo, in the middle of the pounding surf. Sunshine and beachballs don't make the pain go away, Dean. Try cash, instead.

Wayne Gretzky At The ESPYs: There's A Joke Here Somewhere, But I Just Can't Find It

Hey! Look! Wayne Gretzky is out with his family! Well, most of it, anyway; the daughter doesn't seem to be with them. She's probably off somewhere thanking the gods that she got her looks from her mother. Unless they traded her in for that little guy in front; he's a cutie, for sure.

Anyhoo. YAWN. So Wayne Gretzky sometimes drags his ass away from the hockey rink, so what? Unless somebody's got a picture of him and Janet working the slots at the casino, I'm really not all that interested. Yeah, that statement probably counts as treason in some Canadian provinces, but that doesn't really bother me. I turned in my passport when they gave Pamela Anderson a star on Canada's Walk of Fame. Actually, that's a lie: I turned in my passport when Canada built its Walk Of Fame and gave Rich Little and Anne Murray the first stars. It's not just a utopia of maple syrup and canoe sex and universal health care up here, people. We can be downright embarassing.

Sarah McLachlan Gives Birth To Baby Girl

That is, we think so. Celebrity Baby Blog is reporting that Sarah McLachlan gave birth to another baby girl last week, but the birth hasn't been announced by any official representatives.

If she has had the kid, and just isn't saying anything, that is just, like, waaay too traditionally Canadian of her. Laying low and all that. Doesn't she know that pop stars are supposed to share everything but the afterbirth with the media? You just know that if Nelly Furtado gets pregnant again she'll have a press conference in the delivery room and then maybe get Timbaland to do a video with her while she's pushing. And Celine Dion did everything but get the Canadian federal government to issue new stamps when her kid was born. Sarah's gotta get with the program if she wants keep up with the new standard of Canadian fame-whorage.

Then again, maybe there's just no baby yet. Or, maybe - gasp - Sarah's not a fame whore. Could it be possible?

God, this gossip bizness makes one cynical.
