The Duggars: God-Lovin' Family-Values Folk, Or Child Abusers?

Are the Duggars - that happy-go-lucky, home-schoolin', Jeebus-praisin', birth-control rejectin' family of 17 that just became a family of 18 - really the models of good Christian family values (every child a blessing!), or are they, in fact, child-abusers?

Gawker raised the question last week, and I gotta say, having watched a few episodes over the holidays, it's kind of a good question. Obviously, nobody is suggesting that the Duggar mere and pere beat their children or whatever, but still - doesn't having so many kids that you couldn't, as a parent, possibly have a close relationship with any single one of them (18! How do they even remember their names?) count as a kind of benign neglect? You can't tell me that those children aren't effectually raising each other - there simply aren't enough hours in the day for the parents (especially seeing as they have multiple businesses and a TV show) to provide attention to each kid. Maybe it's not abusive or negligent, but there's a case to be made, as Gawker says, that it's at best disturbing and at worst terrifying.

Which, whatever. There are a great many children in the world that deal with much worse. But still - these people are cashing in on their apparent devotion to the principles fo family and the cherishing of children as God-given gifts. Gifts, shmifts - back in the day, when I was insisting to my parents and grandparents and aunts and uncles that there was no such thing as too many Barbies, a whole lot of those dolls ended up ignored, under my bed or stuffed in boxes. The first few were cherished, the first half-dozen, even, were doted upon - but once I had a crowd, they all kinda started looking the same and I couldn't remember their names and it just got a bit boring.

Children aren't Barbies, I know, but still - moderation has long been considered a virtue for a reason. Excess is excess. Just sayin'.

Taylor Hanson Must Be Swimming in Diapers

Taylor Hanson, the middle brother of the pop trio Hanson, and his wife Natalie welcomed fourth child Viggo Moriah on Tuesday. That's a helluva lot of diapers. Oh wait - celebrities don't change diapers.

People magazine reports that baby, mom and dad are doing well. "Viggo is doing great. He is the perfect early Christmas gift," the couple says of their 8 lb., 5 oz. arrival. "We look forward to being home to enjoy the holidays with him and his very excited brothers and sister."

The new arrival joins older brothers Ezra, 6, and River, 2, and sister Penelope, 3. Taylor and his brothers are a virile bunch - older brother Isaac has two sons and younger brother Zac has one son.

Congratulations Taylor and Natalie - only fourteen more to go and you're caught up with the Duggars!

Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels To Wed

Melissa Etheridge and her longtime partner Tammy Lynn Michaels are planning to tie the knot. "Yes, we have four children and we're trying to find the right time," Etheridge said in an interview with Extra. Four kids! That's a lot, although it's two less than Angelina Jolie and fourteen less than Michelle Duggar...

The couple welcomed twins Miller Steven and Johnnie Rose in 2006. Etheridge also has two children with former partner Julie Cypher: daughter Bailey Jean and son Beckett who were conceived via artificial insemination thanks to a "donation" by friend and rock legend David Crosby

Etheridge and Michaels first exchanged vows in Malibu in 2003 - now that gay marriage is legalized in California, the couple will make it official. Don't wait too long Melissa and Tammy - Propostion 8 will be rearing its ugly head on ballots in November.

Chris O'Donnell and Wife Have Baby No. 5

Grey's Anatomy and Batman alum Chris O'Donnell and his wife Caroline have delayed sleep and regular showers for another three years - the couple just welcomed their fifth child on December 10.

Maeve Frances O'Donnell joins sister Lily, 8, and brothers Chip, 7; Charlie, 4; Finley, 1. Just doing the math here, Maeve was conceived when little Finley was only three months old. I think about these things so you don't have to.

O'Donnell's next movie is Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, where he'll be playing - what else - a dad.

Eat Your Heart Out, Tom Brady: Bridget Moynahan is SMOKIN'

Bridget Moynahan is, it seems, challenging Salma Hayek for the title of sexiest pregnant lady in Tinseltown. Sure, Salma's got those spectacular boobies - latest reports are that they now have their own time zone - but Bridget's rocking a fresh-scrubbed, glowy-faced look that would make seventeen-year old models raised on goats' milk in former Soviet bloc countries weep. (I'd have said, 'make boyfriend-snatching Brazilian supermodels weep', but we all know that Brazilian glamazons don't cry. They just adjust their thong bikinis and move on.)

I've said it before and I'll say it again: If I looked this good while pregnant, I'd make sure that I was knocked up all the time. My household would probably start looking a little Duggar Family-ish, sure, but what the hell? I'd be HOT.
