Apple CEO Steve Jobs Takes Medical Leave

Amidst ongoing speculation about his health, Apple Inc. co-founder and Chief Executive Steve Jobs said Wednesday he is taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June. Job's announcement comes just a week after he assured investors and employees that his recent weight loss was caused by what he called a 'treatable hormone deficiency.'

In 2004 Jobs revealed that he had undergone successful surgery to treat a very rare form of pancreatic cancer, but rumors persisted about his health. Concerns about his condition intensified after Apple announced in December that Jobs would not make his annual keynote address at this year's Macworld conference in San Francisco.

Jobs, 53, said in a letter last week that he would remain as CEO despite his condition, and said he had already started the "relatively simple and straightforward" treatment for the problem.

But in an e-mail to employees Wednesday, Jobs appeared to back down from his previous statements. "During the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought," he wrote.

"Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well...In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June."

The illness, not to mention the ongoing public and media speculation must be difficult for Jobs' wife and kids. Let's hope the next few months give him and his family the chance to deal with his illness and heal in private.

Steve Jobs Heart Attack?

Steve Jobs is the man behind Apple and Pixar and the largest shareholder of Disney stock. He has four children. One might say he's doing okay. Others might say he had a heart attack. It depends on who you talk to.

On Friday word started spreading that Jobs, who has lost weight recently due to undisclosed nutritional problems, had suffered a heart attack and Apple stock went below $100 per share for the first time since the introduction of the iPhone.

Apple has stated that the claim is "not true" and maintains that the health of Jobs is a private matter.

The SEC is investigating the source of the rumor.

I hope they're looking in boxes of free pizza for chubby guys in tweed.

David Beckham Named Manliest Man Alive; Hemingway Spins In Grave

David Beckham is, I think we can all agree, a pretty stellar example of beauty in its masculine form. He's no Michelangelo's David - I should hope not, anyway, for the sake of his sex life - but he is pretty cut and buff and chiselled in all the right places.

(Doubt this claim? Check this out and tell me if you still disagree.)

But manly? Worthy of being named the most masculine male star? Excuse me while I try to keep my sides from splitting open from ALL THE LAUGHING.

David Beckham is about as metrosexual as they come. Buffed and waxed and polished and slicked and drenched in beauty product, this guy is the very antithesis of manly. He is more girlishly vain than even his wife - who, I think, holds a more convincing claim to the title of 'manly' in that household, not least because she looks like she can and does kick his ass - and more often than not presents as prettier than his wife. So he's a skilled athlete - so what? He's the feyest player on the pitch - when he even gets on the pitch - and no amount of bending his balls can make him seem any less a well-coiffed show-puppy and any more a man. I'm sure that his kids think that he's pretty dude-tastic - who doesn't want a sports star for a dad? - but the sportiness doesn't make up for the manliness-deficit caused by his excessive use of hair-gel and his hopeless addiction to having pretty nude portaits of himself done.

Pretty, maybe, from an arty point of view, and certainly somewhat hot, but manly? No.

It's a pretty stupid list, if you ask me. Not as gratuitously stupid as that Unsexiest Woman Alive list that we discussed yesterday, but still, pretty dumb. Other names on the list included Matt Damon and Justin Timberlake, which lead me to believe that this list was put together by somebody's granny. And Steve Jobs? Really? Somebody's drunk granny put this list together.

Noah and Owen Wyle Away the Day

Other than being a professional Steve Jobs impersonator, we haven't seen a lot of Noah Wyle since he left ER. Looks like he's been passing the time with his kids. That's Owen, 4, that he's walking with there.

Actually, I'm surprised he isn't out trying to hawk some iPhones. It's a good gig if you can get it.
