Harry Potter and The Chamber of Obama Girls

Sasha and Malia Obama, fresh off their Inauguration night visit from the Jonas Brothers, continue their world domination of all teenage girls' dreams. The First Daughters have been invited by Harry Potter himself on a private tour of Hogwarts. Pretty cool!

Potter star Daniel Radcliffe described President Obama as, "everything the rest of the world liked about America and now likes again,” and wants to show his admiration by giving Sasha and Malia a little star treatment.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to issue a public invitation to the Obamas that if their daughters would like a private tour of the Harry Potter set, I would be honored to be their personal tour guide," Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe, who is set to begin filming the final installment in the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is optimistic for America's future under Obama. "He is a symbol of progress which is what we dig about this country. What you love about England is all the old buildings and such. The traditions. I love that, too. But this is what we want from you."

With the girls rubbing elbows with so many celebrities lately, could a future in show biz be far beind? Probably not - First Lady Michelle doesn't seem like a stage mom, and certainly not the type to let any of this go to her daughters' heads.

Although, seeing Sasha and Malia host Saturday Night Live - how awesome would that be? Hey, just throwing it out there.

Really? We're still talking about Miley Cyrus posing seemingly topless for Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Vanity Fair? Seems like Jamie Lee Curtis said it best when she alluded to the fact that there are actual problems in the world that should have our attention. Even Rosie O'Donnell is making sense, which may be one of the problems Jamie Lee was alluding to. Frightening.

Not to be outdone by every other person with eyes and an internet connection the ladies of The View offered up their two cents and some change on the matter. The video is below. Brace yourself.

Miley Cyrus' Parents are to Blame: The World According to Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis knows a thing or two about posing topless. Of course the uproar over her doing so was that it was for the cover of the AARP magazine, and apparently she's too old for such frivolity. Miley Cyrus, at 15, posed pseudo-topless for Vanity Fair. She's too young.

Americans like our topless models in the 18 - 40 range.

Jamie Lee Curtis is laying the blame on Miley's parents. That isn't to say that Annie Leibovitz didn't go a bit far in her attempt at art, and yes, Miley should have realized that her posing for the pictures in question would cause her career some unwanted criticism. They deserve their share of the responsibility.

People are also bitching about Disney to the point that they felt the need to comment. Disney has nothing to do with it. That's like Nerve Media being blamed for me posing for those awkward photos last weekend. Hey, I needed the money. I didn't call Nerve to okay it, and Disney didn't have any say in Miley's spread.

But I digress. Here's what Jamie Lee Curtis wrote in The Huffington Post:

I woke up this morning concerned about the world food shortage and Korean defectors attempting self immolation in protest of Beijing and was astonished at the amount of attention a young woman named Miley Cyrus was getting for a topless, or shall I say backless, photograph in Vanity Fair.

Just to connect the dots, I too have weathered a recent bout of hysteria over a supposed topless, or shall I say strapless, photograph in a magazine. In my case it was an understanding that the photo in question be shoulders up regardless if I was wearing a suit of armor, chastity belt, wet suit, strapless bra or nothing. It is, was and will always be irrelevant and only became an issue when it was publicized as "topless". All the nipple loving/leering people wanted to know...was it true? Kids I know asked their parents and me if I had posed topless. Saturday Night Live in a funny parody alluded to it as well as the efficacy of Activia yogurt and we all had a good laugh and it sold magazines and it is/was over. Now this. (Video Below)

Apparently young Ms. Cyrus has apologized for something she was told would be artistic and now feels embarrassed about. I feel for her. Of course she is embarrassed. She is a young girl. She shouldn't have to deal with any of this. I don't feel that she was duped. I know the integrity of Ms. Liebovitz and the magazine and I know there were people present at the shoot that should have been looking out to make sure that this didn't happen. In the offending photo she looks tousled and soft and vulnerable and yes...even sexy. She is fifteen after all, and the word sex is starting to come up. I seem to remember a fourteen/fifteen year old Brooke Shields commenting that nothing came between her and her Calvins. There would be no problem if Ms. Cyrus doesn't represent something that is counterintuitive to that image.

In the article in the New York Times Business Section, a Disney executive is quoted, saying "For Miley Cyrus to be a 'good girl' is now a business decision for her. Parents have invested in her godliness. If she violates that trust, she won't get it back." In the world of constant scrutiny how can a young person not violate this and develop a mind, body and spirit of their own? Look at the '50s and the idols of that time. Many gay men with beards...sham marriages. Young stars trying out their sexuality secretly. My own mother (pre-show business) was married at 14 to be able to explore her own passions.

Today's generation of performers have had to navigate the treacherous shoals of adolescence in full frontal viewberty [sic] of the peering voyeurism of the media and it's voyeuristic participants. We have watched them as they stumble out of the safety of childhood, not that being a professional actor as a child is safe, but that is another blog, into the glare of celebrity, rehab, prison, teen pregnancy and now this, a backless shot of a young girl. It was called "artistic'. If we keep a young person's natural sexuality in check during their performing years what happens to it? It has to come out. Daniel Radcliffe is starring in Equus which includes nudity and parodied his natural urges (hilariously) on Ricky Gervais' EXTRAS. He has had to carry the weight and morals of Harry Potter and Warner Brothers and can now, as Harry has grown up and the series is nearing its end, tread lightly into adult fare and explore his art.

When these young people get all dressed up for award show red-carpet events don't we all comment how beautiful, stunning and grown-up they look in their strapless/backless dresses and heels and tousled hair? None of this is new. None of this should be news. But it is news because it is a business. It is all Business. It is called Show Business. Show Abyss-ness! I call it Show-OFF Business. You throw a child into the jaws of a business and they will get eaten.

I know how Miley feels. I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless "scandal" and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat. I only wish that her guardians had protected her.

And To Think, The World Almost Didn't Have Harry Potter To Blame For All Its Evils

Harry Potter creator JK Rowling says that she came very, very close to committing suicide in the years before Harry Potter became a global bestseller. What saved her? Her daughter, Jessica.

Rowling says: "We're talking suicidal thoughts here, we're not talking 'I'm a little bit miserable.'"

"The thing that made me face the fact that this was not a normal state that I was in was probably my daughter [Jessica, then a baby].

"She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, 'This isn't right, this can't be right, she cannot grow up in this state,'" Rowling added.

With her regular doctor away at the time of her depression, she began seeing a therapist who "absolutely saved me."

Rowling said she has "never been remotely ashamed of having been depressed. Never."

"I think I'm abnormally shameless on that account because what's to be ashamed of?"

She urges anybody suffering from depression to "go and get help.

"I went through a really rough time," Rowling added, "and I'm quite proud of the fact that I got out of that."

And Harry Potter fans everywhere are very, very grateful.

Oscar Winner Says Harry Potter Is Bad For Kids

No, it`s not because of the witchcraft and dark arts, or because Dumbledore`s gay or because that naughty Daniel Radcliffe showed his man-parts in that dirty stage play about horses or whatever. It`s because - get this - boarding school f*cks kids up, and the Harry Potter franchise glorifies boarding school.

So says Tilda Swinton, who insists that she would never, ever take a role in the Harry Potter movies for that very reason.

The actress, who played the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia, told the April issue of Out magazine: "I'm loath to say anything good about going to boarding school, which is one of the reasons why I'm not a believer in Harry Potter. Because I believe it fetishizes boarding school for children."

Oooh. Fetishizes, even. Somehow, that just makes it sound all the more interesting. Which is the whole problem for Tilda, I`m guessing. Whatever. There are worse things to fetishize than studying hard and mastering all sorts of complicated arts at a boarding school, I think. I mean - it`s school. I`d much rather my kids fetishize school than, say, Miley Cyrus`s MySpace page or the cast of High School Musical (which, although it has `school` in the title, has nothing to do at all with school, being almost entirely concerned, as it is, with Zac Efron`s hair.) So, yeah - if my child grows up to devour the canon of Harry Potter novels and develops a hankering to go to boarding school, I`m not exactly going to be fussed about it.

I have every respect for Tilda, but she needs to chill.

J.K. Rowling Considering 8th Harry Potter Book

Exciting news for Harry Potter fans: J.K. Rowling is pondering the idea of writing an 8th book for the series. This time around would not have Harry as the main character, however.

In an interview with Time Magazine (who voted her as one of the People of the Year for 2007) she said, "There have been times since finishing, weak moments, when I've said 'Yeah, all right' to the eighth novel."

She is getting enormous pressure from her oldest daughter, 14, and expects more pressure as her 2 and 4 year olds get into the series.

"If - and it's a big if - I ever write an eighth book, I doubt that Harry would be the central character. I feel I've already told his story.

"But these are big ifs. Let's give it ten years."

Rowling is currently working on two writing projects – an adult novel and a "political fairy tale" – and is involved in charity work.

And so we wait. I hope she keeps writing the Harry Potter series. It's great to see kids so entangled in these stories and treasuring a good read.
