Tom Cruise Named In Scientology Lawsuit

Tom Cruise has been named in a lawsuit against the Church of Scientology. Which is fascinating, really: who knew that you could get sued for participating in crazy?

The lawsuit has been filed by ex-Scientologist Peter Letterese, who claims that the church harassed him after he left. According to the NY Daily News, Letterese claims, among other things, that "a member of the church phoned his lawyer at home, and when the lawyer's wife answered, said he was her husband's homosexual lover."

What does Tom Cruise have to do with all this? Well, Letterese says that the Church of Scientology is a "crime syndicate" and wants it broken up under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization law in the same manner that Mafia families have been broken up, and Cruise is a top member of the Scientology 'family.' Letterese says that Scientology head David Miscavige is "aided and abetted by the actions of Tom Cruise, his right-hand man for foreign and domestic promotion, as well as for foreign and domestic lobbying. He has assisted the syndicate in acquiring funds and [made] his own donations of money believed to be in the multiple tens of millions of dollars."

Which is to say, he wants Cruise's money.

I'm no fan of Tom Cruise, and I'm even less of a fan of the Church of Scientology, but this whole thing strikes me as contrived and unnecessary. I mean, aren't there better things to sue Tom Cruise about? You know, perhaps for Creeping Everybody Out, or for Ruining Oprah And Couches For Everybody, Forever? Those kind of lawsuits, I could get behind.

Scientologists Want Kimora Lee Simmons. Kimora Lee Simmons Says, TALK TO THE HAND

Kimora Lee Simmons might not be anyone's first pick for Mother Of The Year - you know, what with all of that marching her children down runways in Baby Phat bling and all - but at least she has the sense to not let herself be used as a propaganda tool in the Church of Scientology's campaign to brainwash kids.

Fox News reports that a Scientology video has been leaked in which Scientology leader David Miscavige announces that Kimora Lee Simmons has been distributing the group’s "Way to Happiness" propaganda pamphlet in New Jersey and Los Angeles.

The news that Simmons is somehow involved in Scientology comes around the six-minute mark in the eight-minute video (in which, in true, noble Scientology fashion, Miscavige advocates violence against practitioners of psychiatry) posted at YouTube:

Miscavige, dressed in a tuxedo, seems to be addressing a large crowd in the gauche, ornate Celebrity Center in Hollywood from the same podium on which he gave Tom Cruise an Olympic-looking medal in 2004.

He tells the gathering that to reach new recruits 12 to 18 years old, they can do better than Simmons, who "funnels booklets" in the aforementioned locales. On the screen behind him, Simmons’ face is shown.

Only one problem, though, Simmons’ publicist told Fox that Kimora is in no way involved with Scientology. "I’ve asked everyone," said the flack. "Kimora is not a Scientologist. We have nothing to do with this."

I should hope not. Not only is Scientology an evil cult that exploits the vulnerabilities and pocketbooks of the rich and the weak, it just has not shown Kimora any respect, at all. Do better than Kimora Lee Simmons at seducing bling-addicted young women with daddy-supported credit cards? Nuh-UH!
