Mark Wahlberg and his 5 year old Ella Rae checked into the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. She's a cutie.

Mark Wahlberg and his family won't be staying in Los Angeles forever, it's not the best place to raise a family. He said, "We won't stay there forever but it's very difficult to raise normal kids in an environment like that. And I was thinking there's no real role models for girls. You've got Britney Spears, you've got Paris Hilton; they're nice enough people but I don't want my daughter to aspire to be like that."

I wonder if they will move to somewhere off the map to raise their kids.

Mark Wahlberg- Shoo Fly You're Bothering Me

Mark Walhberg doesn't want to be bothered, and he's not afraid to let you know. He especially doesn't want to bothered at church.
He was recently quoted saying, "I go to church and people ask me if they can be on Entourage, what’s gonna happen. I go to church to worship, I don’t go to church to talk about it. The stuff that I did with my entourage back in the day is stuff that I’m not proud of and I’m asking forgiveness for; I don’t want things brought up in church, but, if you go to church in Beverly Hills, those kind of things happen. I get scripts, resumes, books - people tried to come up to me with a children’s book before and I wouldn’t take it. They got upset with me. This is church."
So if you go to the same church as Mark take note, don't bother him, he doesn't like it.

Mattel To Release Heath Ledger Doll

This, I think, is a tad disturbing: just a week after Heath Ledger's funeral, toy company Mattel has announced that it will release a Heath Ledger doll. You know, for the kiddies.

From Page Six:

Mattel has announced that the company will be releasing two dolls featuring Heath as the Joker. One version will come with a rocket launcher and the other will be armed with a little knife and both will be marketed to coincide with the release of The Dark Knight in July.

A spokesman for the Ledger family says that they gave the project their blessing: "Heath was very proud of his work in the film and his family is aware and supportive of the plans for the movie."

It's nice that his family is supportive, but isn't the only relevant party here his daughter? Who's going to explain to Matilda why it is that Daddy only comes in miniature - and creepy, lipsticked knife-wielding supervillian miniature, at that? I know that knife-wielding Joker dolls aren't marketed to pre-schoolers, but still. I find it creepy.

With the tragic death of Heath Ledger, comes the sad reality that his baby daughter will grow up without him. However, Heath's family vows that Matilda will be raised as an Aussie, and have a carefree childhood just like her daddy did.

The Ledger family plan to stand by Michelle and hope that their grandchild will have that Aussie connection.

I'm sure between Ledger's parents and siblings and Michelle Williams, little Matilda will grow up with her father's spirit and the best memories of him.

Michelle is lucky to have such a wonderful, loving support system for herself and her little girl.

Brad Pitt is more than just a pretty face. The guy is pretty deep and amazingly grounded. He recently talked to Parade magazine about his passion for helping others, his lack of religious faith and his empathy with the tabloids.

On helping others: "Whoever said all men are born equal never left his own backyard. I see people everywhere without opportunity. I want to help level the playing field."

On religion and faith: "When I got untethered from the comfort of religion, it wasn't a loss of faith for me, it was a discovery of self. I had faith that I'm capable enough to handle any situation. There's peace in understanding that I have only one life, here and now, and I'm responsible."

On the paparazzi: "I understand the tabloid machine. There's money to be made off of Angie and me, but it has gotten so out-of-hand. There's no decency, even when it comes to our kids."

I feel for Brad, and it's not just because I feel the same pressures of fame and amazing good looks, which I do, but because he seems so genuine despite having every opportunity not to be. That says a lot about a person.

At the end of the day he's just a loving dad, and that is about as cool as it gets. He adds, "What's important to me is that I've defined my beliefs and lived according to them and not betrayed them. One of those is my belief in family. I still have faith in that."

Amen, brother.

The Faith Hill Photo Lie

Jezebel brought down a sh*t storm last week when they posted these Faith Hill before and after shots from her recent Redbook cover. The interwebs were aflame as everyone scrambled to board the Outraged Express: How dare the media propagate this kind of lie? The real Faith looked better! When will the truth become our common currency? (Answers: because it makes them rich, yes sort of, and check back on the 10th of Never.)

Everyone is right. The retouching is offensive. But why is everyone so surprised? We've seen dramatic examples of this before.

Remember the Dove Evolution commercial where they showed how to make a perfectly beautiful model even more beautiful, from lighting to hair, makeup and retouching? Here is another video from YouTube that shows "extreme retouching" in which everyone gets a new eye color. Search Google for "retouching examples" and you'll find links like this. Stacy Morrison, editor-in-chief of Redbook, responded to the Jezebel induced frenzy by saying what they did was industry standard retouching. Sadly, that's true.

The thing that fries my bacon is the more intricate lie that goes along with the cover photo that every "knows" is retouched. Read the words that go with the picture and tell your brain how to interpret that openly fake photo. In marketing we call it positioning, but you can just think of it as The Story They Want You to Buy. And I do mean buy.

Stacy Morrison blogged about the photo shoot that resulted in The Cover Seen Round the Internet. She calls Faith "genuine" and refers to how photographers make subjects look good with "lighting and whatnot." In two simple sentences, she positions what you see as the real deal because Faith = genuine, and anything done to make the photo look better as a combination of good light (OMG those pink light bulbs work wonders!) and some technical adjustments too minor to actually name.

Inside the issue is a Q&A with Faith and Tim. The first paragraph sets the readers' perceptions and experience by calling the pair "unfiltered," i.e. believe that what you see is what you get, without artifice or manipulation. This is right under another obviously Photoshopped image of Faith.

In the Q&A the two talk about their kids, balancing family with work, and a lot about food. Southern comfort food, yummy, delicious carb-filled goodness. Subtext: Faith is a Mom with like you, she has the same concerns that you do, she eats the kind of food you like, and she looks like that picture. The stars are just like us! If you try hard enough you can eat that way and have that amazing body. Without wrinkles! But of course you need help, everyone does, and you can figure out how to buy the right diet book, botox or skinny pill by reading the magazine.

Redbook picked Faith to be on their cover to leverage her personal brand of accessible, authentic Mom and turn readers who identiy with her into consumers through Faith's tacit endorsement of everything in the publication. Redbook reinforces Faith's brand through positioning (she's so down to earth!) and provides visual cues of what we're conditioned to desire (skinny and good hair.) Then the magazine is packed with ads for things that by association will make you just like the picture of Faith on the cover. The fact that it's fake and perpetually unattainable means we're all doomed to be repeat buyers. Genius!

I wonder what Faith thinks about all this. If she's selling her image this way on purpose, or if she's being manipulated like the rest of us. And I wonder how she explains things like this to her three daughters.

Mostly I wonder how much longer we're all going to be willing dupes to the photos and the words and the marketing. I think it's time to cancel a couple of magazine subscriptions and see if that gets anyone's attention.
