Teri Hatcher: Playdate At The White House?

Teri Hatcher arrived at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild in Los Angeles Sunday night, looking very, uh, festive. I'm still undecided about her dress - it sort of looks like it's made of layers of tissue paper. But then again, I'm not into couture.

Dress aside, the Desperate Housewives actress dished on the red carpet, saying she'd love to babysit the Obama girls, Malia and Sasha.

Hatcher said, "I end up being the great babysitter at every event I ever go to. They'd come my way and I'd be the babysitter, which would be just fine...If we're ever so lucky to be invited."

Who knows? Maybe she and daughter Emerson Rose, 11, will someday be invited to the White House!

Here's Teri Hatcher of "Desperate Housewives" with her daughter, Emerson Rose (11), attending the Huffington Post's pre-inaugural ball on Monday. Teri, 44, was in New York City over the weekend. Emerson is Teri's daughter with ex-husband Jon Tenney.

I can't imagine freezing on the Mall on Tuesday just to watch the ants in the inauguration. I mean, that's what Barack looked like from wherever you were standing. Unless you happened to be Malia or Sasha.

PlumberGate: Joe The Plumber IS Related to Charles Keating, and Also Owes Back Taxes!

It just keeps getting worse for good ol regular Joe the Plumber. In my earlier post I mentioned some rumors swirling around the internet about the world's most famous drain cleaner (aka Joe Wurzelbacher.) According to The Huffington Post, the rumor concerning Joe being related to Charles Keating is true. So when McCain, in his odd, snarky, annoying way, blurted out to Joe, "You're rich!" I guess he wasn't kidding.

Robert J. Elisberg of The Huffington Post writes:

You see, Joe Wurzelbacher is apparently related to Robert Wurzelbacher. Who is the son-in-law of (are you ready...?) Charles Keating!

Yes, that Charles Keating. The Charles Keating of the Keating 5 Scandal. For which John McCain was reprimanded by the United States Senate, for his involvement in attempting to illegally influence government regulators. The Charles Keating who John McCain has been trying to avoid have mentioned. So, he basically mentioned it 24 times.

Anyway, back to Robert Wurzelbacher, Joe the Plumber's father. You see, Robert Wurzelbacher was an executive of American Continental Corporation, the parent company of Charles Keating's Lincoln Savings. That's the bank which caused citizens to lose their life savings and cost U.S. taxpayers $3.4 billion. As part of that scandal, Robert Wurzelbacher pleaded guilty to three counts of misapplying $14 million and served 40 months in prison.

And now, Lincoln Savings, Robert Wurzelbacher and Joe the Plumber are back with John McCain.

"Congratulations! You're rich!," indeed.

Elisberg adds: "Never mind that Joe the Plumber has state tax liens files against him. As the court representative says, Joe the Plumber might not even be aware of the lien."

So what started off as a story about a father trying hard to provide for his family is turning into something else, and no doubt there will be plenty more information being leaked. (No pun intended.) We'll see if PlumberGate will send McCain's campaign down the toilet. (Pun totally intended!)

You asked for it, and you got it, Tina Fey returned to Saturday Night Live to portray Sarah Palin and she NAILED it.

Pregnant Amy Poehler reprised her role as Hilary Clinton and paired with her Baby Mama costar Fey to define the role of sexism in the 2008 election.

Really? We're still talking about Miley Cyrus posing seemingly topless for Annie Leibovitz on the cover of Vanity Fair? Seems like Jamie Lee Curtis said it best when she alluded to the fact that there are actual problems in the world that should have our attention. Even Rosie O'Donnell is making sense, which may be one of the problems Jamie Lee was alluding to. Frightening.

Not to be outdone by every other person with eyes and an internet connection the ladies of The View offered up their two cents and some change on the matter. The video is below. Brace yourself.

Jamie Lee Curtis knows a thing or two about posing topless. Of course the uproar over her doing so was that it was for the cover of the AARP magazine, and apparently she's too old for such frivolity. Miley Cyrus, at 15, posed pseudo-topless for Vanity Fair. She's too young.

Americans like our topless models in the 18 - 40 range.

Jamie Lee Curtis is laying the blame on Miley's parents. That isn't to say that Annie Leibovitz didn't go a bit far in her attempt at art, and yes, Miley should have realized that her posing for the pictures in question would cause her career some unwanted criticism. They deserve their share of the responsibility.

People are also bitching about Disney to the point that they felt the need to comment. Disney has nothing to do with it. That's like Nerve Media being blamed for me posing for those awkward photos last weekend. Hey, I needed the money. I didn't call Nerve to okay it, and Disney didn't have any say in Miley's spread.

But I digress. Here's what Jamie Lee Curtis wrote in The Huffington Post:

I woke up this morning concerned about the world food shortage and Korean defectors attempting self immolation in protest of Beijing and was astonished at the amount of attention a young woman named Miley Cyrus was getting for a topless, or shall I say backless, photograph in Vanity Fair.

Just to connect the dots, I too have weathered a recent bout of hysteria over a supposed topless, or shall I say strapless, photograph in a magazine. In my case it was an understanding that the photo in question be shoulders up regardless if I was wearing a suit of armor, chastity belt, wet suit, strapless bra or nothing. It is, was and will always be irrelevant and only became an issue when it was publicized as "topless". All the nipple loving/leering people wanted to know...was it true? Kids I know asked their parents and me if I had posed topless. Saturday Night Live in a funny parody alluded to it as well as the efficacy of Activia yogurt and we all had a good laugh and it sold magazines and it is/was over. Now this. (Video Below)

Apparently young Ms. Cyrus has apologized for something she was told would be artistic and now feels embarrassed about. I feel for her. Of course she is embarrassed. She is a young girl. She shouldn't have to deal with any of this. I don't feel that she was duped. I know the integrity of Ms. Liebovitz and the magazine and I know there were people present at the shoot that should have been looking out to make sure that this didn't happen. In the offending photo she looks tousled and soft and vulnerable and yes...even sexy. She is fifteen after all, and the word sex is starting to come up. I seem to remember a fourteen/fifteen year old Brooke Shields commenting that nothing came between her and her Calvins. There would be no problem if Ms. Cyrus doesn't represent something that is counterintuitive to that image.

In the article in the New York Times Business Section, a Disney executive is quoted, saying "For Miley Cyrus to be a 'good girl' is now a business decision for her. Parents have invested in her godliness. If she violates that trust, she won't get it back." In the world of constant scrutiny how can a young person not violate this and develop a mind, body and spirit of their own? Look at the '50s and the idols of that time. Many gay men with beards...sham marriages. Young stars trying out their sexuality secretly. My own mother (pre-show business) was married at 14 to be able to explore her own passions.

Today's generation of performers have had to navigate the treacherous shoals of adolescence in full frontal viewberty [sic] of the peering voyeurism of the media and it's voyeuristic participants. We have watched them as they stumble out of the safety of childhood, not that being a professional actor as a child is safe, but that is another blog, into the glare of celebrity, rehab, prison, teen pregnancy and now this, a backless shot of a young girl. It was called "artistic'. If we keep a young person's natural sexuality in check during their performing years what happens to it? It has to come out. Daniel Radcliffe is starring in Equus which includes nudity and parodied his natural urges (hilariously) on Ricky Gervais' EXTRAS. He has had to carry the weight and morals of Harry Potter and Warner Brothers and can now, as Harry has grown up and the series is nearing its end, tread lightly into adult fare and explore his art.

When these young people get all dressed up for award show red-carpet events don't we all comment how beautiful, stunning and grown-up they look in their strapless/backless dresses and heels and tousled hair? None of this is new. None of this should be news. But it is news because it is a business. It is all Business. It is called Show Business. Show Abyss-ness! I call it Show-OFF Business. You throw a child into the jaws of a business and they will get eaten.

I know how Miley feels. I too was a little embarrassed by my recent topless "scandal" and the subsequent parodies, but I am an adult woman. I protected myself during the shoot and I can take the heat. I only wish that her guardians had protected her.

I Hate to Say This But I Think I Like Candy Spelling

Who knew Candy Spelling had a sense of humor? I always just thought she was just the vampire wife of Aaron Spelling that was sucking all the cash out of the old guy's pocket. I really wrote her off when I heard she had a room in her mansion just for wrapping gifts. (Okay, I was really just crazy jealous. Look at it! I would just roll around in that ribbon all day long.)

But then I read a piece she just wrote for the Huffington Post about her reaction to daughter Tori's tell all book, and I hate to say it but it's pretty damn funny. Spelling writes about being wheeled in for elbow surgery and realizing the hospital staff is buzzing about Tori.

"Hi, Candy," my surgeon said. "Just watched Tori. She said you and she have a good and non-confrontational relationship."

"Where's the anesthesiologist?" I asked. "Something is wrong with the anesthetic. It's not working."

I thought I heard someone say something about why Tori thought she could get an inheritance when her mother was still alive. "Kids don't get inheritances until both parents pass, and the mother looks quite healthy," one of the operating room experts declared to another.

Don't get too excited. I'm not going to put on a Team Candy t-shirt or start texting her fan letters. But I wouldn't turn down an invitation to do my Christmas wrapping over there.

I love Law and Order's Mariska Hargitay. Last spring she wrote a piece on HuffPo about fear that I will never forget. At any rate, besides being a kick-ass cop on the show and a woman I would totally love to hang out with, she's also the mother of a gorgeous son named August. Jamie Lee Curtis Goes Off on Hollywood Moms

Jamie Lee Curtis insists that she's "asking questions, not pointing fingers," in her essay published Monday at the Huffington Post, but she made it crystal clear that she blames the mothers of Paris, Britney and Lindsay for the sad and desperate situations the troubled young women now find themselves in. If you haven't read it yet, here are some of the highlights:

"The sad paths of the three most popular young women have ended in prison, rehab and mental illness. I hope their mothers are worried sick and wondering, 'What could I have done differently?' And our culture should be asking the same question too."

Referring to her generation of parents, who want to befriend their kids, instead of raise them: ""We applauded every move they made. Every step they took. 'Good climbing, Brandon' was our hue and cry. We were raised by people who didn't 'understand' us and now we don't 'understand' why our children are so messed up. What we need to do is look long and hard at our part in all this. Where did our children get the message that the rules don't apply to them? And where did we, the Mothers, get the message that if we abdicate our responsibilities as Mothers, the Universe will do our job for us? And it does, but without any of the love and tenderness and compassion that we could have given, along with the lessons.""

Jamie Lee had harsh words for Kathy Hilton especially, and waxed philosophical about Paris' dramatic trip back to jail: "It was a painful episode to watch. A young woman, begging her mother, the person who should have taught her right from wrong, to help her, to teach her the rules of life. It was a little too late. And so she wept as the Universe was bringing the teaching and settling the score."

A celebrity baby herself and mom to Annie, 20, and Tom, 11, Jamie Lee had some advice for the Kathy Hiltons and Dinah Lohans of the world: "Children are paparazzi. They take your picture mentally when you don't want them to, when you don't look good, and show it back to you in their behavior.... Wake up, Mothers, and smell the denial."

Damn, that sure sounds like "pointing fingers" to me. We haven't heard about Jamie's kids kicking up a big ruckus yet, but c'mon - her boy's only eleven. There's still plenty of time for him to pull a Danny Bonaduce on us. And her daughter's 20 - hardly out of the woods yet. I know that Jamie Lee is considered an expert on child development now that she's written a few kids' books, and everybody loves her because she seems "real," but I think she sounds a little obnoxious here. A bit preachy too. Not that I don't agree with her... but still. As she says, "celebrities who live in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks."

What we have here are boulders.
