Reese Witherspoon - Gyllenhaal? Not So Fast

Are rumors about a Reese Witherspoon - Jake Gyllenhaal wedding justified? You can bet that the power couple is feeling the pressure.

Reese has a pretty full plate with her upcoming roll as a pro-softball player and two kids -- Ava Elizabeth, 9, and Deacon Reese, 5 -- and she's made it know that she isn't going to hurry into anything following her divorce with ex-husband Ryan Phillippe. But that won't stop friends and the blogosphere from speculating:

“Reese’s best friend, Heather Whitney [co-owner of the LA clothing store Poppy], just got engaged,” a source tells Life & Style magazine. “She’s got Reese thinking! People around her have been speculating that she and Jake are getting closer and closer to the altar, and Heather’s engagement only puts that much more pressure on them. At least they’re discussing [marriage]. Close friends shrug and say ‘I don’t know anything’ when you can tell they know something. Everyone in their circle is talking about it. It’s like any other relationship — the marriage issue has finally caught up with them.”

Perhaps even more significant is the fact that Jake has already proposed -- almost two years ago. Sure, Reese wasn't ready then, but Jake made his intentions pretty clear.

As it goes with most long-term couples, as time passes, the pressure continuously ratchets up. Some reports have them already engaged. We'll see.

I wish I could tell you that Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Phillippe were going to get naked, oil themselves up and then wrestle in a wading pool in my living room. But unfortunately their fight will only be taking place at the Teen Choice Awards, where the future and former Mr. Reese Witherspoons will be battling it out for the title of Choice Movie Actor in a Drama. Gyllenhaal is up for his role in Rendition, and Phillippe for Stop-Loss.

Things could get ugly when the winner is announced, though. I'll think keep my wading pool on standby.

Johnny Depp, Reese Witherspoon Like Being On Top

Get your minds out of the gutter - I'm talking about at the People's Choice Awards. The two stars were named Favorite Male and Female Movie Star, respectively, at a (way) scaled-down version of the annual award show. Another casualty of the writer's strike, the show was hosted by Queen Latifah but mostly featured vintage clips and pre-recorded acceptance speeches sandwiched in-between shots of Latifah directly addressing the cameras and walking around an empty studio. I think it was the first time in awards show history that viewers were praying for a badly-choreographed dance number or an excruciatingly-long song medley.

First the cancelled Golden Globes, now this? What's in store for the Academy Awards if the strike isn't settled by then? Get ready for host Jon Stewart broadcasting live from the Quizno's next to the Kodak Theater, showing us shots of the stars that he's clipped from OK! magazine.

Jake and Reese: Real Couple Or Really Good Scam?

It's getting harder and harder to keep track of this stuff. First we hear that Jake Gyllenhaal and newly-divorced mother of two Reese Witherspoon are a couple, then we hear that they're not, then we hear that he's gay, then we hear that he's not, then we hear that Jake and Reese are a couple again, then we hear that it's all a publicity stunt for their movie Rendition and that maybe Jake's bearded in more ways than one.

I don't know. I kinda don't care anymore. I mean, Jake's equally hot and equally totally unattainable to me whether he's gay or straight, single or coupled, so it really makes no difference to me what he's getting up to. I just worry for Reese, is all. Single mom, freshly divorced - she's gotta be under a lot of pressure, so I think that she really needs a nice boy to hang out with. You know, go for milkshakes, walk on the beach holding hands, that kinda thing. And if Jake's that guy, great - but I gotta say, if this is just a publicity stunt (which, if it is, she's probably in on it, but whatever) or a cover-up for le grande affaire with Austin Nichols, well, then, that just sucks and I'll probably boycott Rendition, which I wasn't going to see anyway, but still. I'll be mad.
