Never Doubt A Mother's Intuition - Kimberly Quaid Talks About Her Twins' Near Tragedy

Dennis and Kimberly Quaid had twins born (by surrogate - using Kimberly's eggs and Dennis' sperm) on November 22. At the age of 12 days, the twins were given an accidental overdose - not once but twice, that the Quaids know about - of the blood-thinning drug Heparin. Instead of receiving a 10 unit dosage, the infants were given 10,000 units. This massive overdose was almost fatal to the babies. Kimberly knew something was wrong at 9pm - she even wrote it on a piece of paper. She had a mother's premonition and said, "I just had this horrible feeling come over me, and I felt like the babies were passing. I just had this feeling of dread."

The couple then called the hospital (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center) and were told that the twins, Zoe Grace and Thomas Boone, were fine, even though the nurses knew that the infants were in danger around that time. It wasn't until the next morning that Dennis and Kimberly learned what had happened to their newborns. Hospital staff - a nurse, their pediatrician and a rep from risk management - met them at the hospital room.

I never doubt a mother's gut instinct. Even new moms have it. It's like it's always been there but the minute you have your baby - whether biologically or otherwise, it's awakened, it becomes part of you. You just know when something's wrong with your child.

The twins are now 4-months old and at home with their parents and thus far, have passed all medical tests. Dennis says that he's "grateful for every day now and doesn't take a day for granted. If they hadn't made it, there never would have been another happy day."

Dennis Quaid's 12 day old twins are in critical condition after recieving the wrong dose of Heparin, TMZ is reporting. Babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace were given the anti-coagulant on Sunday, and sources say they received 10,000 units instead of the proper dose of 10 units. The twins were born November 8th, via surrogate at Cedars.

Honestly that sounds like a huge error in reporting and I hope it is. Either way, we at Famecrawler wish the entire family well.

UPDATE FROM TMZ: "We're told as many as thirteen patients at Cedars were mistakenly given the overdose of Heparin, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins."
