i think it's beautiful that they had a child in a unique way. i mean, after all how else are gay couples supposed to become parents? there's so many different ways of making a family, this is just their choice. i support anyone having a child, as long as they have intentions of raising them right. congrats!! she's beautiful.

I think mr Beatie should go to every news,tv,and radio staion he's been to and publicly apologize .For not only lying but also making money in the process and donate that money to a childrens charity .He was born a women and If his choice is to become a man thats fine however to say your the first pregnant man is inaccurate and unacceptable !If you had been born a hermaphrodite it might work but you were not sir .You in my opinion are disgrace to both sexes and I wander if you lied to America to make money what kind of parent will you be and the example you set is definitely not a good one!

Why are all of going on and on and debating about "male" versus "man"? I could care less about the proper way to address a transgender person. This poor baby is going to grow up in a family with one parent who has been altered...talk about consusing! Is the baby's Mom considered gay now that she technically married a women but legally married a man? And, if she was really sure about becoming a man/male, then why did she leave her female organs intact? Sounds like she/he is still confused.....that poor baby!!!!

i don't understand all the yack regarding this story. this is about a woman who happens to have a beard who had a baby. big whoop!!! there's insanity on jerry springer happening everyday. i don't see that nonsense getting major coverage. and furthermore, i don't care how much of a "man" this person thinks she is, i'm sure she was feeling very womanly when those contractions started kicking in.

tell me a story about a person who was born male with all male parts who had a baby through his member and then i'll be in shock and awe. until then, you all can continue on celebrating this madness by yourselves. i just feel really sorry for the child who has to grow up in this sick situation.

and ms. thang, how can you say that people should mind their own business when this crazy story has been EVERYWHERE??!! in fact, i think you should be more concerned with your grammar and spelling instead of concerning yourself with opinions that differ from yours.

Liz--you make an excellent point regarding how one should refer to someone who is transgendered: it's ultimately up to them. That being said, I don't think that Barack Obama would appreciate being referred to as 'black,' nor would I ever want my son--the offspring of one Jewish parent--to be referred to as 'Jewish.' The quotes seemed like a way of fending off criticism that Sassy was being too pro-transsexual.

I'm a supporter of ANY family who loves,cares and respects their children. We all know there are a lot of "typical" or "conventional" families out there who have parents who abuse/beat/starve/etc their kids, so I hope Thomas and Nancy have a wonderful life with their daughter. We can argue until the cows come home whether he should be called a "man" or a "woman," but really, who cares? I hope they have a happy life, no matter what.

I will try to explain why it's okay for Thomas to refer to himself as a man. First, there is a difference between sex (female and male anatomy) and gender identity (how one perceive's one's own gender - as a man or woman). Most people who have female anatomy also feel like they are a woman. However, some people are born with female anatomy but always had this feeling that they were really a man. Imagine if you felt exactly like you feel now (as a man or woman), but you had the opposite sex's anatomy! That's how many trans people feel. Inside, Thomas feels like a man, acts like a man, probably follows a lot of traditional male gender roles, etc. That's why he calls himself a man. It seems unfair to force him to say he's a woman, even though he has most of his female anatomy in tact. It is expensive and risky for people to undergo transsexual surgery. Hope this helps.

Congrats!!! I think it is extra awesome that Nancy is breastfeeding using induced lactation. This baby is loved and being given the best care possible right from the start, which is more than a lot of kids get from "normal" parents. Good for them!!!!!

As a supporter of trans families, I am very happy for Baby Susan's family and for the positive responses on this blog. I'm curious about Jessie's post, though. I agree that man should not be in quotes. However, terminology for transgender people is a very personal thing. I don't agree that "male" is necessarily "the appropriate and respectful way to refer to him". You would have to ask Thomas himself.

it's tough to think people should mind their own business when they took their shit on Oprah. Whatevah! And I think it's great the transsexual had a baby - but she ain't no man havin' a baby regardless of whatever they've cut off her or sewn on. Seem like you gotta be born with a full compliment of female reproductive anatomy & achieve sexual maturity as a woman to concieve, carry and birth a child.

if they wanted to keep a low profile, they could have donea better job. welcome to what happens when you don't sit down & shut up

Ok... so I wish all the best for Thomas, Nancy and Baby Susan. I think it's fabulous they were able to have sweet little Susan and my following comments are not meant to be taken personally... but, the media circus around this was so ridiculous. Ms. Thang thinks people should mind their own business, but if "the business" is foisted out front of the public - in no small part by the couple themselves - they are inviting discussion. Thomas the man (gender) got pregnant and carried a baby to term as an obviously intact enough woman (sex). The media hype was about a "man" being pregnant. This was no Arnold in "Junior". Does it bring into focus trans-gender issues, as well as non-traditional family issues and show what appears to be a very loving couple bring a baby into the world? Yes. Is the media annoying the he11 out of me and if I hear "the man had the baby" I will scream? Yes.

I put 'man' in quotes Jessie, not to be snarky but to say that Thomas refers to himself as male, although he's still technically a woman. I didn't do it to be rude. Can't please everyone though. The last piece I wrote about him, people jumped on me for calling him a man (minus the quotations). See? Can't win.

This is a 'nice' piece except for the quotes used when calling Thomas Beatie a man. Thomas Beatie is a Female-to-Male transsexual, which means that the appropriate and respectful way to refer to him is as male. Could you have used the term transman--or simply man without the snarky quotes--instead of making light of his sexual identity? Or would that be too 'accepting' for you?
