It's all good and well to talk about the concept of smoking and lung cancer. But my mother smoked and died of lung cancer and let me tell you, it is not an easy way to go. It's painful and the prognoses are rarely if ever given longer than 5 years upon diagnosis. I know my mom questioned every cigarette she'd ever smoked in her hospital bed. She knew the risks and ignored them.

Actually, smoking also is one of the greatest contributors to atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, in general. If you quit smoking, your risk of lung DOES decrease greatly, but it never goes down to the level of a non-smokers' risk. Of course, non-smokers die of lung cancer and heart disease every day, as well.

Hello...?? How about second hand smoke? That's the saddest thing, exposing your innocent kids to smoke plus modeling that behavior. Ick.

Fwiw, my grandfather also smoked for most of his life and lived to be 87, passing away from atherosclerosis/old age. Again, go figure.

Dana Reeves, the wife of Chrisopher Reeves, died of lung cancer in her 40's. She never smoked day in her life. My grandfather smoked for 35 years, quit and lived to be 98 years old. He died of old age.
