I think he's saying the mistake they made was making the relationship accessible [to the press, the public, etc], not that making himself accessible to her was the mistake.

If he's bemoaning the fact that they made it so accessible why is he still talking about it? Tacky. I'm not JLo fan and I think Garner and Affleck are a cute couple, but seriously dude, stop talking about your past relationship. Time to move on.
