I don't think having the term 'milf' is saying that most moms aren't appealing - it's just a conveniant way of indicating an older woman is still sexually attractive to a younger person, i.e. she's a hottie, but a bit more crude than that. The 'mom' bit comes in because the only attractive older women that high school and college kids tend to meet are often friend's moms. hence we got the milf.
