Father of the Year

An Absolutely Amazing Vacation

Though we were only gone for a two weeks, it felt like months.  We all needed it.  We're of course close, the three of us, but in Paris, and then in the South of France we were inseparable.  It was hard to show them my favorite city in just four days but I tried.  Besides the Eiffel Tower we took a bateau mouche along the Seine river and of wandered through Notre Dame...

Here are the kids out front.  They haven't seen "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" yet but now want to:

What I will remember most about these two weeks, however, is how much we played together.  On the beach we swam together or played paddle ball and I have to say that they would spend hours playing and giggling with each other allowing me to sneak off and write a bit.

I realize times are so hard and a lot of people are canceling their vacations but really think the rest of the year is too hard without a great summer treat.

How about you? Are you getting away this summer?  You deserve it.

We just got back from Southern California with our 18-month old, and it was fantastic (we live in Montreal where the weather this summer has been so-so). I wasn't sure if he would behave well, but he was a little champion, even on the plane. I'm a consultant so I don't get paid when I'm off and we do feel the pinch now, but I so agree with you, you just NEED a vacation, what's life about if you don't have these few weeks of fun and carefreeness?

I should have realized from reading your book that you're quite fluent in French, but somehow it just came to me now... Contente de voir que votre séjour en France a si bien été!... La photo avec les enfants est très belle!

Though I am far away from having or adopting kids, I must say that your children are just beautiful Trey. Whatever your feelings of your ex-wife, she gave you Ava and Chet and that's worth putting up with all that New Age foolishness. I must admit that whenever I see the pics of your children, especially of the two in front of the Tower Eiffel, I feel a bit jealous inside. You're a lucky man!

If having a baby last year wasn't hard enough on my wallet, the economy stepped in and finished the job.  No vacation this year.  I'm helping to plan a family reunion cruise for next year and seriously wondering how I'm going to afford even that.

Our "vacations" have been in the form of out of town concerts, a night here and there. But we still love it and we're still out of town. Music means a lot to us, so a good concert can feel like days out of town.

We're also taking a vacation at the end of August to Kiawah Island. My mother-in-law has rented a condo for the week so that our family, the in-laws, and my sister-in-law and her husband can have some respite. Kiawah is quiet and unspoiled and it will be great to slow down, build sandcastles with my 2 year old, and have spirited conversation with the family over relaxing meals and cold drinks.

I'm glad you and the kids had such a good time.
