How my heart grew three sizes that day

By | June 30th, 2010 at 6:33 am

Howdy there Babble readers! I am absolutely thrilled to introduce you to my daughter, Miss Georgia Allison Hickman, born at 11:45 pm  on Sunday, June 27th. Georgia  weighed in at a whopping 5lbs and 7 ozs, and she’s 18 inches long. She was born at 34 weeks and 6 days gestation, and her early arrival was a bit of a shock, despite the fact that I’d been having pretty notable Braxton Hicks contractions for weeks.

As you can see, she’s tiny and perfect and spectacular. Her father, siblings, grandparents extended family and I are  totally and completely smitten.

After Henry died on May 31, I was secretly quite worried that my overwhelming grief and longing for my lost child would make it difficult, if not impossible for me to bond with the new baby once she arrived. All I could think about was how much I wanted my son back; I didnt know how there could be room in my broken heart for the expansive joy that should come with the birth of a new baby. But the moment Baby G was placed in my arms, all of my fears were immediately washed away in a flood of intense love for our new baby girl. And during and immediately following G’s birth, for the first tiime since he left us, I felt Henry’s presence actually with me in a very profound way. Because of this, the first 48 hours since G’s birth have been emotionally intense for me – but in a good way. I had honestly forgotten what real joy feels like until G came into the world on SUnday night. Now I remember. And I am consciously grateful for joy in a way I never have been before,

I’ll write a longer post later – one with more details about G’s surprise delivery, but right now it’s 3:15 am and just about time to try to rouse our sleepy little sprout to try to get her to eat.  I just wanted to check in and let all of you know the wonderful news about the beautiful new life that has joined our family. We are all just over-the-moon excited, and if all goes as expected, today is the day we’ll be bringing her home from the hospital. I’ll keep up you posted.

How ironic that your little girl came on SONday. It might be corny but I thought it was sweet. I’m sure Henry gave her kisses before she left her nest for this earthly place. I’m sure he also whispered in her ear all the ways to drive you crazy as well. Take care and all the best.
