Jalepenos and Tater Tots

When my mother-in-law was pregnant with my husband, she craved spinach.  Mounds and mounds of spinach.  I guess that makes sense, with the iron content.  Me?  I'm craving jalapenos.

I've always liked spicy food.  My grandfather used to eat peppers until the tears ran down his face, and he introduced me to peppers, encouraging me to scoop them off of salad bars and suck the juice out of each one.  But now I want jalapenos on or in everything.  I got a sandwich at Whole Foods, and asked them if they had any peppers - they didn't, but the guy at the counter went in to the back to cut one up for me (sometimes, it pays to be pregnant).  There's a little coffee shop that puts jalapenos in the veggie omelet, and it's my new favorite breakfast place.  This past weekend, Sean and I took a road trip to Western Colorado to meet up with his folks and, on the way back, we stopped by a road side farmer's stand, where they sold pickled jalapenos along with peaches.  Of course I had to get a jar - pickled jalapenos!  Who knew?  And, in case you're wondering, they're delicious.

Jalapenos don't have any vital nutritional value that I'm aware of, nor do I know any old wives' tales about peppers and pregnancy.  It's probably just another weird hormonal quirk, or maybe the baby just digs spicy food.

My earliest cravings were for any sort of potatoes, but especially tater tots.  In the past few months, it's mostly been spicy food - which, oddly enough, doesn't seem to activate the morning/all day sickness.  I'd also kill for some lox or tuna sashimi.  I've got a constant hankering for lemon-flavored anything, capers, and whole dill pickles, but these are also things that, like the jalapenos, I liked pre-pregnancy, but now I'm madly in love with them.  When Sean's home, he cooks for me almost every night, and he makes a mean chicken piccata with extra capers for me.  He's a fabulous cook, and he can make delicious pies from scratch - yes, I'm madly in love with him, too.

Now I'm hungry again.  Time to go eat!

When I was pregnant, I craved acidic things- citrus stuff, orange juice (fresh squeezed was fabulous), capers and pickles, tomatoes- everytime we went out to eat, I got pasta with marinara in some variety.  Sounds like you're going through something similar.  I wonder if this is where the whole "pickles and ice cream" thing got started?

When I found myself pregnant and craving sushi, I realized it wasn't entirely the sushi that I wanted--it was the wasabi. I used to get some cooked varieties just to get a fix...

I tried to eat right during the 2nd and 3rd pregnancies.  Really.  (the first one, I ate everything I could get into my mouth and gained---87 lbs).  I took my vitamins, did all the right stuff.  But I craved stuff I shouldn't be eating a lot of--seafood.  My third pregnancy, I went with my best friend from hs to Vegas.  I was obviously pregnant.  (only gained 8 lbs, but for some reason my gut was HUGE)  I wanted fish, and I normally don't eat a lot of it.  I even called my OB from Vegas to ask what kinds I could eat (he laughed at me and told me to have a good time).  But in each pregnancy, I had a "screw the world" moment.  I ate like crazy.   One other time, we were at the movies and I was getting the popcorn, I told the guy how I wanted it buttered.  I figured it was all I had at that time.

There must be something about pregancy hormones that make  some women crave tangy, spicy stuff. I was the same way, though my tastes ran to sweet and sour, as opposed to spicy: Sour patch kids, popsicles, cranberry juice. It was the only way I could handle meat for a while, too -- pulled pork w. vinegar sauce, enchiladas verdes, chicken tikka masala. (Then, I love these things anyway...)

Oh my goodness.. I craved Jalepenos too!! Are you ready for this one... I needed them on my grilled cheese. I mean needed them like Paris Hilton needs a new bag! It was insane. Now I can't even look at them, never mind eat one! My little man Benjamin was born April 4th... and after that day... I was Jalepenos free!

I love your blog.. I was just reading your past posts!! I have 3 little boys - all under 2 1/2 and no twins... ! I saw your 9 things what you hate about pregnancy... one of mine was - and 'm not kidding - for my last 2 babies I actually had people ask me if they were "PLANNED"! Can you believe that!! Unreal... I just hated the "advice" from people that was unsolicited and the "experts" out there!!

Drove me crazy!!

Great blog... check mine out - I write with my mother and sister:

any sort of mexican food was what my babe wanted the entire pregnancy. i couldnt get enough, the local restaurant was on speeddial and there was a little old man who had a cart who fed me almost every day despite our language barrier...

i ate everything i craved and some of it was on the list of no-nos- i'll admit it i ate salmon sushi while prego- and the babe came out all sorts of alert and healthy.

i think if you eat a variety while prego you'll get a less picky kid but thats just my own little theory...

Super nachos. With my first pregnancy, I ate plate after plate of super nachos from this awesome taqueria down the street. A giant heap of chips, with refried beans (the real kind, with lard), guacamole, cheese, and tons of fresh AND pickled jalepenos. I was kind of sad not to have that craving with the second--they just made me feel like you'd figure they would.

And Audrey, I know this is off-topic, but i wanted to add to the stupid-comments thread. It doesn't stop after they come out. Somebody noticed my daughter's MedicAlert bracelet the other day, and actually asked if I'd done something during pregnancy to cause her condition. I'm proud to say I didn't belt the woman.

On the other hand, this was the second kid, so now that I think about it, maybe it WAS a super-nachos deficiency. Lesson learned: bring on the jalepenos.

For me it was all about the ice cream! I couldn't handle spicy foods -- even some of my old favorites -- for most of my pregnancy. But boy could I pack away some ice cream. And my husband's french toast with real maple syrup. That was my "last meal" before labor, when I knew I had to go in and be induced. Now of course our baby loves ice cream and maple syrup, but it's hard to tell if my cravings have anything to do with that.
