  • Coughing in a Winter Wonderland

First swine flu.  Then croup and baby's second hospital visit.  Now a blizzard.  It's been a busy week.

Axel has made a full recovery from the bug.

Jonas was then struck down by what I thought was the swine flu.  Turns out it was regular old seal-bark cough, gasping for breath croup.  Croup, like the sort that Axel had a minor interaction with last year, that I thought I could handle.  Croup that landed with such force that an all-fronts croup attack plan - steamy bathroom/cold night air/humidifer - was no match for it.  It quickly turned into stridor, into noisy struggling for breath, into nightime panic, and we had to make a 3 am visit to the hospital yet again

The only good thing about two hospital visits in less than four months is that you don't have to fill out all of the paperwork the second time around - you're already in a database you don't really want to be in.  Oh, and you know the best place to park.  Other than that, I can't really recommend it.

  • Sleeping In a Winter Wonderland

We've been up in the mountains for the past few days.  Axel's been exercising his snow bunny genes, inherited from both parents.  My parents were longtime weekend ski instructors who got my brother and me out on skis by the time we were two.  There are shots of my mom skiing with me in a backpack, which I'm sure would be frowned upon these days.  Sean hails from New Hampshire, and moved out to Crested Butte to work in a snowboarding shop and, basically, to be a snowboarding bum for a few years.  Even though we both taught snowboarding for a couple of winters, I'm just lucky to almost keep up with him when we go riding.  I can, however, kick his ass on ice skates.  We've recently taken up tele skiing, though all this pregnancy stuff has seriously interfered with my learning curve.

So, it was about time we got Axel out in the snow.    He can walk across entire rooms without falling down.  He does an aerobic's class worth of squats every day.  His center of gravity is about as low as it can be without it dragging on the floor.  He's ready for some snow sports.

No, we didn't take him skiing.  We're saving that for next year, and snowboarding a few years after that.   Instead, he went sledding!
