He's in for a big shock, isn't he? :-) Glad he's starting to warm up to the idea but really, how can one prepare them for the fact that they will no longer have 100% of your attention? My daughter actually did pretty well when my son was born...until he got mobile and started swiping her stuff. Then, he was a threat. Still is. :-)

It took a while for me to know that our daughter (now 20 months and newly a big sister) was getting it. Then suddenly she began pointing to my belly and saying "baby", and recognizing other babies. She got it.

But then she pointed to her father's belly and said "baby." He promptly put himself on a diet.

My 15 month old has started kissing and patting my ginormous belly, and I have no idea if he gets it when I tell him about the baby in there, or if he just notices how excited everyone gets when he does it. Either way, it is darn cute!

I've wondered about that. I generally think my daughter understands very little and the concept of impending big sisterhood would go way over her little head. Luckily, we don't have to worry about that now. :)

So, I'm totally NOT pregnant, but Eddie has been saying "baby" for awhile. First, it was just in reference to that kid in the mirror. Then it was (and continues to be) used for all humans who are not adults, though no longer for himself (he is now "Ed-dee". I'm totally sure that that 12 year old boy at the GI doctor's office loved being called "baby" by a tiny 15 month old.

However, this morning he showed a sudden attachment to his stuffed bunny. He kept calling it baby. They sound pretty much the same. Other than an n is not a b.

Best of luck to your family when the new addition comes! Axel won't really need to figure out what being a big brother is all about, as that's all he'll ever remember anyway. :)

Little Man is a bit older you know, 27 months. And some of the kids in his class at daycare are becoming big brothers and big sisters, so he knows it's something to be excited about, and he sees babies in daycare.

He knows there's a baby in my belly, and he knows he'll be a big brother. I thought he was getting it.

Then he asked me if I'm going to be the little brother. So actually he probably doesn't get it at all. And I'm fully expecting some horrendous behavior when #2 arrives (any day now, #2).

Do they have baby dolls at day care? Maybe that's where it started. It is so weird how certain things are so similar with 2 different kids at the same age. When Michael was around that age, he would throw his GloWorm on the floor and roughly cover it up with a blanket. Then he would wake it up and repeat. One million times.

I think he will still be disappointed when the baby is finally really here, because I am going to guess he won't be allowed to throw him on the floor and gnaw on his ear. Babies are notoriously uninteresting for a long time. Cooper went through a phase of stuffing things under his shirt and saying baby. Then he would point at my decidedly UNpregnant belly and say baby. Uh, no dude, no baby. Never again. It is just not a clear concept for them.
