VP Talk: Who Wants to be McCain's BFF?

John McCain is used to being alone. After all, what kind of "maverick" would he be if he were, hands down, the most popular guy? (The general election kind, that's right.) So who would be a suitable vice president for McCain, both in netting him support and in convincing us they would play well together? Something tells us Mitt Romney is not going to make the vice presidential short list.

The Atlantic's political blogger has a few suggestions for McCain's VP -- some hardly believable. A lot of you have told Political Nanny you like McCain. So who's your pick? What should the strategy be? Would anybody like to see a McCain/Huckabee ticket? (We'll be watching to see what Huckabee says about his last real competition. He was so nice to McCain back when Mitt Romney was still hanging out in the GOP sandbox and triangulating the Republican vote.)

1. Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN)
2. Gov. John Huntsman (R-UT)
3. Sen. John Thune (R-SD)
4. Ex-Sen. Fred Thompson
5. Ex-Sen. George Allen
[PN noto bene: the "macaca" guy -- surely this is a joke!]
6. Gov. Bobby Jindall (R-LA)
7. Mike Huckabee
8. Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL)
9. Mitt Romney

The Wall Street Journal's Pat Toomey has a few ideas as well, all of whom feel incredibly boring, as white and male as they all are.

Here are a few ideas: Joe Lieberman? Man, that would have the GOP party base wailing! Does Condoleeza Rice do anything for you? Maybe Huckabee, since he claims to be the last "authentic conservative" standing. Dems, please weigh in, too. Is there a VP that would surely sink the Republicans in November?
