Straight From the Bottle

Mother of Four

Yes, it's true. I'm a proud mother of four these days.

Sort of.

Fable does most of the care taking around these parts and even though by day's end I always seem to be clutching her babes in my armpits, trying to cross the street balancing two hands, three purses and a Venti soy latte, Fable's ON mama duty AT LEAST twenty-two of twenty-four hours every day.

She's dedicated, this one.

She feeds them:

IMG_5860IMG_5863IMG_5862IMG_5854

...And takes them shopping:

IMG_5897

Puts them down for naps:

IMG_5800

Even kisses them goodnight:

IMG_5799IMG_5797

This is all a recent occurrence. Before last month Fable dabbled in doll-rearing, fostering various dolls and toys, cars and blankets but in the last few weeks "Baby" and "Baby" have become inseparable friends of Fable's. (She started with "Baby" and then picked "Baby" at the store after Fable decided "Baby" needed a sister.) And that's not all! Fable has also recently taken to purse-carrying, sunglass wearing (even indoors, bathtub and naptime included) not to mention an obsession with hats that are too small for her and sort of half sit on her head all yarmulke-like.

But the babies are BY FAR the most high-maintenance. We lose hats, purses and other various daily-attachments seemingly on the hour. But the babies? OH NO. If Baby or Baby disappear from sight for even a second? Fable FLIPS her lid.

Kind of like a real mother would should she lose track of her own kids.

Dozens of times a day I hear this:

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHAKJSDHKAHDKAJHDKAJDSHKADKASJHDK!!!!" only to find Fable wandering the house with her hands on her head looking for her long, lost babies which, I kid you not, are usually at her feet.

Kind of like me with my sunglasses on my head.

- cell phone in my hand.

-keys in my pocket.

-etc...

She's all girl, this one.

"Fable! Dude! Baby and Baby are RIGHT HERE."

And then she smiles and bangs their faces together to kiss. And then throws her babies across the room, laughs and goes to pick them up again. Aw.

I will say, though, no matter how many purses I have to carry around these days to compensate for Baby and Baby's needs (Baby and Baby need bottles and various plastic animals, stuffed baby-owls, sometimes even snacks of their own where 'er we go.)  and no matter how many family gatherings we've lately attended with me holding dolls in my lap whilst trying to engage in serious conversations...  There is nothing sweeter in all the land than watching my baby mother...

...in sunglasses as big as smart cars.

The way Fable loves her babes makes me think I must be doing something right-ish as her mom.

(Minus the face-banging, throwing them across the room stuff.)

 ***

ED: The babies are Corolle and they're my favorite. They smell amazing and are totally soft and wonderful. Highly recommended for the baby/child in your life.

OMGYES. That was the first doll I ever bought Fable and I keep trying to sneak her into Fable's doll posse to no avail. Fable could care less about her. (I was OBSESSED with Ms. Brite when I was small. Sigh.)

What a sweetheart! Isn't it amazing how hard-wired some of these gender-specific traits are? I never believed it until I saw it for myself.

My 18-month-old son is ALL BOY. He's naturally gravitated toward cars, trucks, balls, dirt, bugs, etc. since birth. Give him a doll and he'd throw it in the dirt and drive a truck over it.

I hope to get to experience this lovely girl energy with my future child.

Emma is the same age as Fable and also has a "baby and baby" that she takes everywhere and rears most hours of the day. She loves toe polish, sunglasses, purses, dresses, jelly sandals, and anything girl. Which is totally weird because I'm a huge tomboy and there aren't any girly girls running around here. I need to start doing my research on how to apply make-up and do hair because seriously I don't own any and my hair is pony-tailed!

I too feel that her love for those babies is a sign that I'm doing something right! She is loving and gentle with them, of course until she bangs them on the floor or throws them across the room!

GAH!  And here, from the title, I thought you were going to say that you're PREGNANT...with TWINS.  Wouldn't that be a HOOT?!  No?  Okay.

This cracked me up!  In the 4th picture, Fable looks like a waitress...chewing on her pen and trying to mentally add up the bill for her customers!

And I'm SO glad to hear that you refrain from face-banging and throwing.  What a relief.  ha ha!

I don't know how verbal Fable is right now...but my girls (3 and 4 1/2) are old enough to be speaking in full sentences, so I often hear them talking to their babies and using the very same phrases that I say.  Yeah.  That can be a GOOD or BAD thing, depending on the day.

Fable is both adorable and hilarious.

@carie: It's Dwell Studio, which has both a more expensive line AND an inexpensive one at Target! I'm 6 1/2 months pregnant and they couldn't confirm the sex at our last sonogram, even though it really looked like it was a girl. So I've been eagerly waiting for my next one -a week from now- so we can make sure and I can buy these very blankets (which I've been eyeing for a while!) They have very cute patterns for boys as well, I have a few pieces for my 3 year-old son.

My 3 year old is in the same mode. She has 3 babies, though the Corolle one is the favorite. Her name is Harley Davidson. One of the few baby dolls I've found that doesn't have a creeptastic face.

Oh, and BTW, Harley is a rocker. She is frequently "tatooed" with washable markers.

We love the Corolle dolls too. We gave my older daughter one for her first birthday. I recently realized that we are going to have to give the same gift to my younger daughter when she turns one. Because, really, some things you don't share. Babies are one of those things. She calls her baby, "Baby Dear." The name comes from the Eloise Wilkin stories.

So cute!!!  My daughter has babies too, and they are also VERY high maintenance.  I often get scolded for being too loud because the babies are sleeping.  They need special "food," special blankies, and there has to be soft, soothing music playing in my daughter's room when we leave so that the babies can fall asleep.  I was never a baby doll kind of girl, so I'm a little baffled.  But my kid sure is happy when she's taking care of her babies!  (I should check out those Corolle dolls!)

Dude, I totally remember having a Rainbow Brite doll when I was a kid. We were so broke that my mom sewed me one - that was the last thing that she ever made for me, because the sheer amount of detail that went into it (hello, rainbow puffs on the sleeves!!) sucked the joy out of her.  I feel bad that, to this day, I can only find like, 50% of the doll and her clothes.

Toni-cracking up at your past tense of drag turning into how you drug your babies!! hilarious!!

ggc-when my now almost 16 yr old was 1 we moved to tx (her dad was in the army) and our stuff didn't get there until weeks later. the neighbor gave her a used, ugly, naked baby doll to play with. my daughter wrapped the baby's head in tape, making her even more ugly, and carried her everywhere!!!!!!!!!!! wouldn't let me buy her a new one, get her clothes or remove the tape. it was hilarious. i often felt like i needed to explain but of course since she was only 1 there was no explanation for tape head. "she had a boo-boo?" i guess i'll never know but man, you just brought back memories!

Um..."we should get our babies all colors of babies to play with"? Why?

Is it wrong that myself and my same-race husband can only have same-race babies together? Would that be suggesting something horribly wrong to our children, that we didn't go out and adopt some stray, different baby?

There's nothing wrong with having pride in your ethnic roots and sticking to them. And encouraging your children to do the same. It's called "heritage."
