Moms Ink: MomsRising Takes Back Feminism

MomsRising, started in 2006 by Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner and Joan Blades (of MoveON.org) comes out of their collaboration The Motherhood Manifesto and is a  grassroots movement for parents who want to be part of a movement to further family friendly laws and social policies, including those represented by the acronym M.O.T.H.E.R.:

Maternity/paternity leave

Open flexible work

TV we choose and other after-school options

Healthcare for all kids

Excellent childcare

Realistic and fair wages

MomsRising claims 50,000 members and its efforts have been hailed by Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Ted Kennedy, and others.  The founders are both experienced activists and the hope is that the agenda put forth by MomsRising and further  delineated in their documentary "The Motherhood Manifesto" will achieve broad bi-partisan support moving forward.

As with other feminist movements in the past, MomsRising will struggle to reach beyond the class divides that have hampered the National Organization of Women (NOW) and others.  The computer-savvy seem to be the main audience for MomsRising (as with MoveON.org) with the action updates and informational emails coming via the Internet.  As with other efforts to date, the faces and voices of MomsRising are predominately white.

Nevertheless, many people feel that a women's movement that finally takes on some of the central struggles of being a parent in today's society is long overdue and a welcome change.  Perhaps, as with the suffragettes, this second wave of activists will finally achieve the goals of earlier generations.

I sure hope so.

This is just socialism. It is not in my or my family's best interest to have the government invovled with my handling of life's challenges. When you give people the freedom to handle life's challenges and remove government and the court system from their private lives, you get the best possible society for the most people. This would create at best a mediocre standard of living for everyone, probably it would be worse than mediorce.

In the end it will provide a disincentive for people to be hard working, productive members of society. Everything will be handed out to the lazy and incompentent as well as to the industrious, creative and diligent. Why work your tail off if you get the crap doled out by big sister government as your neighbors?

Flexible work hours so moms can see more of their children? Healthcare for ALL children? You're right, Dobson, it seems like a fucking conspiracy to me ...

If you let the government manage these things, the economy will crumble and everyone's standard of living will tumble. Socialism (goverment control of economic forces) will fail everytime and these promises of a better life will NEVER be delivered. You will give up the freedom to earn money and spend it as you like and be left with an empty bag of goods to show for it.

I'm a full time working moma dn yeah, it sucks that I have to be away from my kids. but it's a choice I made and I'll accept the consequences rather than try to force every working American to subsidize my choice to raise a family.

Let's talk about subsidies that really drain the economy, shall we?

How about corporate welfare, how about funding a war that has tripled our national debt?

If you're so concerned about the economic impacts of big government, you better start tracking WHICH government programs cost the most (war, tax breaks for corporations, etc. etc.).

I don't support the current war or goverment favors to corporations either. Yes those are further examples of big government. None of which benefit hard working individuals.

One you've experienced the challenge of finding affordable and high quality child care , you begin to understand why so many families opt to have one parent stay home and care for their children. And you also appreciate the popularity of grassroots movements
