My Ears are Bleeding: Sunday School Jamz

Sunday School JamzI was minding my own business, watching "Dora the Explorer" or "Blue's Clues" or something that we TiVo for the kids when a commercial came on that made me want to renounce God. "Sunday School Jamz". That's right. Jamz with a "Z". Rockin' out for Jesus. And just like Kidz Bop, it is actual children torturing you with their song.

To add insult to injury, they have their own MySpace page, a place where you can check out hits such as "I'm in the Lord's Army", "Give Me Oil in My Lamp" and "My God is So Big". If that doesn't make you vomit you can also check out Worship Jamz MySpace Page, where they do a version of my least favorite praise song ever - "Awesome God".

I lost faith a long time ago, but even I can aprreciate the beauty of a good hymn. However, in my opinion, Sunday School Jamz is proof there is no God.

Sounds like you've renounced God already.

Don't knock the music unless the arrangements are terrible.   The titles you mention are favorites and are probably on   dozens of CDs.

Sounds like a good soundtrack for Purgatory.

When I was in college, I was watching that Simpsons episode where the Flanderseses sing "I've got that joy joy joy joy down in my heart."  A non-Christian friend was amazed when I told him that was a real song.

I, too, nearly fell off the couch when that commercial came on.  The Kidz Bop one is bad enough (I have to hit 'mute' during SpongeBob when that thing comes on), but this just takes the cake.

I don't know if it's because my hippie parents raised us to be atheists or what, but "church songs" always strike me as kinda icky.  I just get weirded out to think of legions of little kids singing their guts out to these songs with no idea what the words actually mean and from there my mind goes into a Hitler Youth tangent and we're all still uncomfortable.  Mindless mindlessness.

Yes, singing/reciting things you don't understand is scary... I remember being at a school assembly in eighth grade where the president of the frickin' Honor Society led the Pledge thusly: "I pledge of allegiance to the flag..."  Of course, everyone just repeated it.
