So Now You're Saying TV Doesn't Make Kids Fat?

girl tvI am so confused. First they told me that commercials make my kids fat. Then they said that I don't even realize my kids are fat. Now they are saying 'Oh yeah, you're kids are totally fat, but it isn't television's fault.'

A new study says that (in teenagers at least) how much television a kid watches has no relationship with physical activity. Now, I'm no researchologist, but unless I'm on a treadmill in front of a tv, or watching a workout video I know that if I am watching a show I am usually sitting on my ass (and frequently eating or drinking beer to boot). I also know that I can't be in two places at once, so odds are if I am playing soccer I am not watching tv.

You guys are with me, right?

I'd like to get excited about this study. I'd love to let my kids watch more tv so that I could spend more time on the internet have more time to clean the house, but I'm not buying it. Every child they studied was the child of a nurse and almost all of them were "non-Hispanic whites".

So what have we really learned? If your mother is a nurse and you are a white teenager you may not be fat just because of tv. Wow - that's deep, man.

I am SO with you on this! Just trying to figure out whose income we're protecting here by lying about the fat/TV connection. Networks? Advertisers? One of those I'm sure.

I hate TV. I'm not a purist. I watch all kinds of crap (seriously, pure crap) when my kids are asleep, but in addition to the couch potato aspect, I hate the messages kids get about all kinds of things: gender roles, body image. What toys they have to have and what foods they have to eat (hey could THIS have anything to do with kids eating too much?).

And on another note, can I mention here that my mother-in-law introduced my daughters to the word "calories" yesterday and explained how they can make you gain weight?

Do my 5 and 10 year olds really need to know this? Do they need to think about this?

Oy.

thanks for the venting opportunity.

Not that I want to question an assistant prof at Harvard Medical School, but what a crock.

Children who watch more than five hours of TV per day are four-and-a-half times more likely to become overweight than those who watch two hours or less (http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/yourchild/tv.htm), and kids who watch more than two hours of television a day are more likely to smoke and have high cholesterol (http://www.freepress.net/news/print.php?id=4098).

I'm really sick of hearing about all the wasted money on "reasearch".  When are we just going to get back to basics and understand that inactivity+high caloric intake = weight gain.  Whether you're watching tv, reading, texting, on the internet, etc.  TV is always the scape goat on all these "studies" they do.  Get back to basics -- cut back the tv, the sweets, and get the kids outside more.  Did I need a grant to find that out?  No.  And I don't even have a PhD.
