WA State Considers Paid Family Leave

Washington State may be one of the first states to pass a paid family leave law, if a proposed bill passes the state house and secures the Governor's signature (highly likely given Governor Christine Gregoire's stance on related issues).

Senate Bill 5659, the Family Leave Insurance Bill, passed the Washington State Senate earlier this week.  If it becomes law, businesses would be required to give eligible employees up to 5 weeks of paid family leave to care for a new baby, adoptive child, ill family member, spouse, or for personal sick leave.

The payout for sick leave would be capped at $250 per week and would adjust with inflation.  To cover the cost of the program, and estimated $100 million per year, the bill proposes to hike payroll taxes by 2 cents per hour per employee.  If the law passes, it will be the second most rich family leave policy in the nation behind California. If you or anyone you know has ever struggled to make up income during an unpaid maternity leave or to care for a sick parent, you'll appreciate the improvement this would bring to the lives of many families in Washington State.

My employer (a private university in NYC) offers six weeks of paid maternity/patenity leave for the primary care giver. If you are just the husband or wife who will not stay home with the child you will still get a week off, paid.

Five weeks, btw, is really way too short. Six months, like what many other countries offer, would be much better for the kid and the parent.

"Washington State may be the first state to pass a paid family leave law" is inaccurate.  California passed their paid family leave law in 2004.

I live in CA and didn't take any leave when Thing 2 was born due to the paperwork and, well, basically the paperwork.

Thing 1 was  born in WA, and to go on a tangent here, was an incredbile experience.  Fantastic.

The hospital and staff in L.A. felt like we had gone backwards 20 years.

Oregon is considering this same action - there is a rally at the state capital on Monday. I believe MamasRising is helping to organize?

I don't think you should expect your employer to cover your expenses when bad (or good) things happen that cause you to miss work.  You should plan ahead for your own emergencies.  Two cents per employee per year at forty hours is around 42 dollars.  How about they just take the two cents out of your paycheck, seeing as how your employers already pay at least twice as much in taxes as their employees do.
