Got Any Extra Babies? Mail 'Em Down the "Hatch"!

Posted by Karen Murphy

baby hatchA hospital in Japan opened the country's first and only drop box for unwanted babies recently, despite government protest. Billed as a "last resort" for desperate parents, the hatch opens into an incubated space that trips an alarm, alerting hospital personnel that there's a baby inside. It's hoped that the new "Baby Hatch" will help discourage abortions and babies abandoned in public places. Babies dropped off in the hatch will be cared for initially by hospital personnel and then made available for adoption.

I think this a wonderful idea. Why is it that only Germany and South Africa already have these? Everyone knows that there can be times, for some parents, when the prospect of caring for a baby is simply too overwhelming, frightening, or inappropriate. Why cast judgment on these parents (who undoubtedly carry enough guilt about it on their own) when the babies can find loving and wonderful homes with parents who want and will care for them?

Many states in the US have laws stating that an unwanted baby can be brought to the ER of a hospital without repercussion to the mother/person dropping off the child.  I don't know exactly how many states, but I know there are programs in at least Illinois, Wisconsin, California and South Carolina, just to name a few.

Italy has one; (his was in the NYT recently and the article did a good job of pointing out that the target population was children of undocumented and/or transient workers who feel economically and politically overwhelmed.  The doctor noted that once child had obviously been exclusively breastfed for months and was dropped off in scruplously clean clothes and blankets.

In Illinois, Moses laws allow parents to drop off newborns in ERs, fire departments and police stations.  I personally feel this option is both underreported and underpromoted (whenever they find a live newborn, instead of collectively saying thank providence, the media usually says, the birth mother will be found and prosecueed for endangerment.  How about publicizing the better options too?)

I believe Moses laws are a good idea, they keep babies alive (without cutting into abortion rights or the right of a parent to keep his or her child).  Think of the alternative:  my local high school (not elite but neither so bad by Chicago standards) had twin boys found dead in a girls room two  years ago.  A completely preventable tragedy.

I was just about to point out California has a law about it... but its even more broad then just hospitals. The CA law covers firehouses and police stations and I think a few other locations.

In Ca you even have a few days to change your mind without any legal repercussions.
