Search-Engine Optimization for Baby Names?

Posted by Karen Murphy

baby computerI admit, until about a year ago I had no idea what SEO stood for. Serial Exit Organizer? Standard Equivalent Outhouse? Nah. So then, even when I knew it stood for search-engine optimization, I was like, What??

But new or about-to-be parents, they're steps ahead of me. In fact, they're Googling prospective baby names so that their little Jacobs and Emilys won't have to compete with all the other Jacobs and Emilys, because actually they will be naming their kids Metallica or Debraska or Quillan, Kaytaquana, or even Scatman to ensure "that their kids won’t face too much competition in securing a high search rank."

And smart parents-to-be are even securing web domains for their SEO'd offspring. What do you think: is all this necessary to get ahead? Or is this a little much?

I did this just the other day. I Googled my favorite girls' name - and come to find out that that name is shared with a famous (enough to have a wikipedia entry) author and feminist I'd never encountered before.

Knowing that hasn't changed the way I view the name, but it is still interesting.

Okay, I must admit that I did a google search for many potential baby names, in addition to checking the social security administration's website. But I checked to see how popular the name was, not to optimize the name for later "search rank." This, to me, seems like more evidence that parents are taking themselves--and their children--a little too seriously.

I googled our daughter's name, though honestly we named her after a character on one of our favorite TV shows (FIREFLY!).  I was surprised to find there were several people it hit, but nothing out of the oridinary.

I'll admit I'm one of those geeks that secured domain names for both my kids...

So quickly we forget. It wasn't even a week ago that the sun set on Mother's Day -- meaning the trash is piling up again, the Diaper Genie is feeling ignored and about to just change itself and don't even get me started on foot rubbing. You

I made fun of this once before , and maybe it smacks of "branding" but the more I think about it, the more it makes sense: more and more parents today are reserving domain names for their kids at birth. And why not? We are in increasingly online
