Jada Pinkett Smith: When Good Mamas Make Bad Music

One of my very favorite Hollywood couples (intrigued already, aren't you?) is Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. They just seem to have it together and I love that they speak openly about their mutual respect, shared sense of humor and inability to keep their hands off of each other. So what if their kids' names are all variations of their own? And so what if they occasional make the ho-hum movie or are just a tad too uncomfortably glib about how freaking talented and confident their children are?

But today, after cringing through a David Letterman musical performance by the band Wicked Wisdom featuring Jada on the lead mic, I am quite worried that the magic has  faded. Jada's performance is all crazy hair and awkward bouncing off of amps, not to mention the screeching non-singing. I even watched a video of another song to be sure that I wasn't unfairly judging (what? me?) the star for one uneasy foray as front-woman. Alas, that video was just as bad as the Letterman gig, and I'm actually quite accepting of many forms of female-angst, tortured lyrics and over-played electric type of music. But this? Oy.

While watching it, I felt like maybe Jada was trying out for last year's Rock Star: Super Nova and that she was the clear candidate for Dave Navarro to slam and send on her way in week one of the show. I also wondered if Jada was just taking her strange zealousness for how unfairly she feels the media has portrayed poor, little brainwashed "tigress" Katie Holmes and put it to a spoken-word, pseudo mosh-pittable tune. There's some talk that Wicked Wisdom will be hitting the stage as a part of Ozzfest, the annual tour that's committed to being free of charge to see this summer. While I think it may be best for the gorgeous mama to give back the mic for good, if she must perform with her band, I'd say this ticket price is just about right.
