The Daddy-Daughter Dance: One, Two, Three, Awww!

Posted by Karen Murphy

butterfly kisses bookMaybe it's a Southern thing, I don't know, but in Leesburg, Virginia they're still cranking out the Daddy-Daughter dances. Yep, 50 tiaraed and bejeweled little princesses recently bunny-hopped and hokey-pokeyed with their suited-up daddies. I could totally make fun of this but at the same time it's kind of sweet, you know? Okay, saccharine-sweet maybe. But daddies should definitely dance with their daughters. Shouldn't every little girl get to have a memory of getting all dressed up and standing on her daddy's feet while twirling around to music?

And at least it's not a Purity Ball. Ew.

But please, next time you have one of these dances, Leesburg Virginia? Please leave out "Butterfly Kisses."  I'm begging you.

OK - I'll comment.  To be blunt, Yuck!  As a little girl I would have been mortified to do this.  And to be honest, my husband would do just about anything to avoid attending a daddy-daughter dance with our little girl if such an occasion were to arise.

Maybe I'm totally wrong, but unless one is a girly-girl (i.e. prone to wearing frills and sequins), what is the appeal of this exactly?  As a child who wore a dress once a year - on Christmas day (because I was forced to) - I thought girls who did the tiara princess thing were nuts.

One last thing - and I do feel bad saying this - the most recent exposure I have had to a daddy-daughter dance is suffering through a dozen proofs of photos my friend took of her 7-year-old daughter and 40-year-old husband as they left for the dance.  Sorry to say, those were some of the creepiest images I have seen in a while... kind of Purity Ball Lite, actually.

Sorry to sound so mean.  I just do not get the point.  But, for those who enjoy, great.  Thankfully such things are not mandatory.

The community I work in is having a Father/Daughter ball.  The target audience is elementary girls.  The purpose is to teach them manners and etiquette.  The girls in my class were really excited.  I think it is kind of nice.  They get to dress up fancy and dance with their dads.

If' you'd like a slow dance number to dance to with your little daughter, here's one of my own original songs that has become a popular Father's Day song this year on the internet.
