Is Sunscreen Adequate Protection For Kids? Probably Not

Posted by Karen Murphy

stupid sun babyWhen I was a kid, no one used sunscreen. Once in awhile we'd slather on some Coppertone (or worse yet, baby oil!), but that was at the pool or the beach, and it was strictly for better tanning, not for sun protection. Which makes me a prime candidate for melanoma mutations, since the highest risk for those is associated with high sun exposure up to age 20.

Then along came sunscreen, and we've been slathering on the protection ever since. It'll prevent those nasty UV rays, right?

Maybe not.

For one thing, most of us don't use enough. Adults need a shotglassful (I can remember that amount), while kids need about a tablespoon. That's definitely more than I've been using. Plus, it doesn't even work for about 30 minutes after it's applied, so you need to think ahead. If you're already out in the sun and applying it, it's too late.

What's even more worrying is that sunscreen really doesn't work all that well. For one thing, until recently sunscreen only filtered the UVB rays, the ones that cause sunburn, allowing the cancer-causing UVA rays to run rampant on our skin. There are sunscreens available now that filter UVA rays: look for the ingredient Helioplex. These sunscreens are more expensive but totally worth it. We're talking cancer here! Another ingredient, Mexoryl, is widely available in Europe (of course) but in the U.S. only appears in sunscreen-containing moisturizer. How twisted is that?

But the very BEST protection, especially for the delicate skins of our kids, is shade. Check the daily UV index via your weather provider (what kind of phrase is that? "weather provider"? Wouldn't that be, like, God?) and if it's high, turn on the YouTube for the kiddoes and stay inside and make ice cream or something.

Thanks for the tip on the UVA protection (or lack thereof!).  Will definitely look for helioplex next time I'm out - you'd think it'd be standard in sunscreen, especially for kids!!  After all, they're always on us about slathering sunscreen on kids, but fat lot of good it seems to be doing, at least in the cancer prevention dept.

*moans* baby oil will be the death of me.  I get frequent mole-checks (every six months) due to my reckless lifeguarding baby-oil slathered youth.  So far so good, but I'm sure the damage is done.

I definitely use enough sunscreen on Jillian.  I basically fill up my palm and go to town on her.  She's all slimy and gross for awhile afterwards, but at least I'm sure she's covered!  Then I stick a hat on her, try to stay in the shade, and hope for the best.

Karen,

Thanks for posting this great summary!  Many people think they are protecting themselves with sunscreens that only protect against UVB rays, when they may be raising their risk by feeling free to stay out in the sun because they are not burning.

Thanks especially for the reminder to seek out shade.  The risk of melanoma in 1935 before sunscreen was available was one in 1500.  It is now one in 84.  What did our grandparents do?  They sought shade as you recommend, and if they had YouTube, would have chosen that over risking their childrens health!  Thanks!

I work in the sunscreen industry for several years and a few weeks ago I had my first melanoma removed!! I feel revolted when I see that american people- and specially children- have not been protected correctly in the last decades using either non stable products and/or products protecting only from the burning rays - the uvb ones.

Today mexoryl has finally been approved in anthelios sx (available at cvs pharmacvy counter and on line at www.anthelios.com)

My recommendation is first avoid yoiur children to go under the sun, and educate them to wear their sunscreen everyday like they have to brush their teeth every day. Anthelios is a sunscreen formulated in a moisturizing texture to be pleasant when u apply.I wish I knew more a few years ago and could have avoided the melanoma - but for my children I will use all that I know today to protect them every day even in winter as we know that uva penetrate the clouds and the window.

They also carry an aromatherapy broad spectrum sunscreen.

They were featured this month in Parents Magazine.
