More on Co-Sleeping; It's Still Invented by Lucifer

I love surfing through Babble-pedia and finding great written-by-parents articles on everything from ADHD to banking. (Seriously, check it out.) But the co-sleeping section of the online parenting encyclopedia really struck a nerve.

Co-sleeping is great. No-so controversial anymore. Everyone does it. Yada yada yada. There's a brief mention of how parents might not sleep soundly, but I don't think it goes far enough. So I'm rewriting it.

"Co-sleeping is great for about five minutes or so until your baby starts to kick you in the balls, and then lifts her head high in the air and slams it into your chin -- all night. Co-sleeping should be tried by people who sleep with cups. And not the drinking kind."

But I realize I may be in the minority. How would you write it?

God knows what you say is true, but that's why it invented the co-sleeper, a crib-like device that stays next to your bed.  It's like a fold-up crib, a Pack'n'Play, if you will, with an adjustable mattress height so the infant can be next to you, close to you, but not all over you.  We used it on our lone child (so far) for her first three months. Me, mommy and baby seemed all to like it.

Eh, my baby doesn't move around that much. I would say co-sleeping works best if you have a king sized bed. When we were on vacation and we had one, it was fine. Here at home? He's in his crib, we're in the Queen bed, everybody's happy.

While I have no balls and therefore cannot comment on that aspect of co-sleeping (the only time my baby has kicked me was when the cat was sleeping on her head and trying to suffocate her) I also understand the evils of co-sleeping.  We had a co-sleeper which we took down when the baby would only sleep in the swing (a few month phase) and when we put it back up it was broken....bastards!!  Now the baby sleep in her crib until she wakes in the night and then sleeps with us.

Co-sleeping:

a pact entered into with satan that appears to offer convenience and continued sleep while really robbing you of all quality sleep.

An arrangement in which my baby sleeps like...er, a baby while I am roused with every movement and sound that she makes.  Once that baby enters the bed, my blissful sleep is effectively over!

Really I co-sleep for me and my baby.  Ok, it's mostly for me.  I don't have to stay up and feed her when she wakes, I can just put a nipple in her mouth and fall back to sleep....plus I don't have to listen to her scream her head off.

My husband and I slept in the living room - me on the couch, him on the floor - for the first 3 months or so. We did this in order to be closer to the kitchen in case we needed anything - and the computer during those long sleepless nights.

The baby slept in a bassinet on the floor next to me. I don't think I would have been able to have her in bed with me (if we were actually in our bedroom). I had so little sleep as it was.

So, whatever we might have lost in being right next to each other was gained by a more rested mommy (or daddy) the following morning!

We kept both of our kids in a bassinet next to the bed until they were sleeping through the night (about 7 weeks - scheduling is awesome!)  After that they moved into their own crib in their OWN room.  I think this keeps our bed from being a place that they associate with sleeping, so we can sleep through the night without being invaded.  Whenever we bring one of our kids into bed with us they think its playtime, and thats fine with us.

I think co-sleeping robs kids of some much needed independence.
