Arctic Circle Movie/Strollerderby T-Shirt Giveaway!

cute polar bearsHey, everyone! It's our very first contest! And to win all you have to do is comment! Strollerderby, in partnership with the new environmentally-friendly nature film Arctic Tale, is giving away 20 movie T-shirts to folks who share one thing they are doing to help protect the environment in the comments below. Winners will be selected at random and we'll announce them in a separate post on Monday the 16th (along with a round-up of your tips!) so be sure to check back to see if you've won!

Arctic Tale is an epic adventure that explores the vast world of the Great North. The film follows the walrus, Seela, and the polar bear Nanu, on their journey from birth to adolescence to maturity and parenthood in the frozen Arctic wilderness.  Once a perpetual winter wonderland of snow and ice, the walrus and the polar bear are losing their beautiful icebound world as it melts from underneath them.  Artic Tale is brought to you by National Geographic Films, the people who brought you March of the Penguins and Paramount Classics, the studio that brought you An Inconvenient Truth. The film is narrated by Queen Latifah and opens in selected cities on July 25.

Check out the Artic Tale site for previews and cool downloads, then get to commenting! Just one environmentally-friendly tip will get you a soft, comfy T-shirt, the perfect summer beach cover-up. Contest ends Sunday, July 15 at midnight.

Note: Please be sure your Babble profile includes a URL where we can contact you.

I'll bite! Here's my comment: I'd love to know if "Arctic Tale" is appropriate for a young three-year-old. So when someone sees the movie, or a long trailer, let us all know how young of a young'un should see it.

My SD connection prevents me from winning, but I wanted to share this trailer -- because it looks awesome. I can't wait.

I only bathe my boys once/week to save water.

Kidding.

We recycle plastics, glass and papers- our town makes this pretty easy to do, fortuantely.

Also every year or so we visit a local municiple solid waste facility that bales up trash for many of the surrounding communities before sending it to the balefill (modern landfill). It's a very dramatic lesson in how much trash people produce. Plus, kids love watching all the the trucks move around and seeing heaps of garbage smooshed into neat cubes.

I weaned my family off of paper napkins and paper towels, plus we recycle so much stuff that we need two recycling cans.  Instead of buying water in a plastic bottle, I carry at least two reusable water bottles with me everywhere.  We keep the thermostat around 80 degrees in the summer but only when it's humid, otherwise the windows are open.  And in the winter, if you're cold it means you aren't wearing enough clothing since the thermostat is usually around 65.  What else... I wash laundry in cold water only.  I use the short wash cycle on the dishwasher.

I repurposed empty cans of formula powder and made them into flowerpots.

There's lots more but I'm headed off to the pool!

Yes... might as well have a good look at the artic, so our kids can actually see what it's like in 30 years.  At least on film.

We limit the amount of garbage we produce by having backyard compost, recycle everything possible and use regularly our local freecycle.com which drastically reduces our waste.

I bicycle (with my kid) everywhere, which also reduces the amount of stuff we buy since I have to carry everything in my  knapsack.

Basically I indulge my husband on his environmental obsessiveness :)  Washing/reusing bags, recycyling everying, buying stuff in bulk and using tupperware for snacks, and we moved way closer to work so we save oodles of gas each week.

I was using a LOT of paper towels to wipe off messy hands and faces after meals, so I bought a bulk package (qty 48) of white washcloths and a nice glass apothecary jar to keep them in, and now I use those instead. I also try to used them as often as is sanitary before I toss them in the wash. Bonus: The terry cloth fabric is actually much more effective than paper towels at wiping off gooey stuff like peanut butter!

We don't do nearly enough, but here goes:

Don't use paper towels or napkins

Don't use paper plates/plastic utensils for parties

Recycle

Wash full loads of clothes

Use cloth bags for groceries as much as possible

Run errands in vehicle at one time, instead of multiple trips

Take public transportation when possible

Used cloth diaper for first few months (I know, there's debate about this, but kept a few hundred paper ones out of landfill)

Buy some groceries in bulk

I made cloth bags to use for groceries.  You can let your kids choose a cute colorful fabric so they have their own bag.  Then encourage them to choose healthy foods while and then they can help bag and carry them into the house.

When I forget to bring cloth bags, I always reuse the plastic ones for diapers and trash can liners.
