Plastic Bottles Suck

Posted by Karen Murphy

baby-bottleParents have enough to worry about these days as it is, especially parents of newborns. But here's one more: experts are advocating that you refrain from using poycarbonate baby bottles and sippy cups.

Yikes! We've mentioned this before, but it's worth another go: these clear, hard, shatterproof plastic items contain Bisphenol-A (BPA), which is being blamed for lots of bad stuff like cancer! Early onset of puberty! Infertility! More cancer!

Baby bottle brands containing BPA include Avent, Dr. Brown's, Evenflo, Gerber and Playtex. And, oh, when I say "experts", I mean the writers of a fairly mainstream baby advice book called Baby 411, which has been revised to include a warning against bottles with BPA.

Here's how you can avoid BPA in your baby's life if you use bottles:

1. Use glass bottles.

2. Use opaque-plastic bottles, like from Medela.

3. Use BPA-free plastic bottles, like from Born Free.

4. Use a drop-in system with bottles.

5. Don't buy store-bought baby food in metal or plastic containers

Oh! And what about toddlers, you ask? There's an excellent non-BPA sippy-cup wrap-up over at Z Recommends. I favor the stainless steel Kleen Kanteen myself.

Update! Here's another excellent and brand-specific wrap-up of baby bottles over at Z Recs

Okay, enough. There will ALWAYS be stuff for us to fret over. SHESH. Now tell me, where do I get a chemical free non-cancer causing binki should I so desire one? And where do I find the plastic bubble to forever shield my child from the entire cancer causing universe?

I've started giving the baby beer. Comes in glass bottles already! No need to wash, just recycle! Keeps the baby really mellow, too, except for those times she becomes a mean drunk and takes a swing at me.

I'm kinda tired of the overused "plastic bubble" counterargument. I mean, with that reasoning, why breastfeed? why use a car seat? why refrain from shooting heroin during labor?

While I definitely agree that you have to draw the line somewhere in the "Is it toxic?" game, it's always good to be an informed consumer. I, for one, am grateful that there are people out there researching this stuff. The public has a right to know what goes into our food, our clothing and our baby bottles!

And frankly, I think that big companies like Gerber and Evenflo use the "what DOESN'T cause cancer these days" mindset to their advantage.

Ya wanna know what's worse? This is also a problem with water bottles too. Look for anything labeled with the recycling code 7. That generally includes polycarbonate and other BPA leeching compounds. It's amazingly difficult to avoid, even for adults.

Personally, I agree with Krystal and Jane. You know what causes cancer? Life. A parent can only worry so much before one looses it and ends up curled up in a fetal position in their giant hermetically sealed, organic, HEPA filtered, boiled and sterile, and BPA free #5 labeled plastic bubble.

Here you can have water bottles

with usually have large openings that can be cleaned much easier than small bottles.
