Aiiii! Despite assurances from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission last May that vinyl baby bibs are more or less safe, Toys 'R Us is pulling 160,000 of them off its shelves as a precaution. Testing continues on a variety of vinyl bibs to determine lead content, and while some have been found to be safe, other brands are still in a testing phase, so Toys 'R Us is pulling all of them to prevent confusion.
Too bad, I am confused already.
Actually, not so much. The CPSC issued a statement last May saying that vinyl bibs, even if containing lead (which many do), are essentially safe as long as they remain intact and in good condition. But if they deteriorate to the point where a baby could pull or bite off a piece and swallow it, there would be a concern that enough lead would therefore be ingested to cause a health concern.
Um, yeah. I'm good with not using the vinyl bibs, thanks CPSC.
So Toys 'R Us, which I always thought was evil, seems to recognize the confusion factor and is pulling ALL vinyl bibs to be sure. Plus, you can return any vinyl bib purchased there for a full refund. Even, presumably, one covered with spinach and peas.
