Will My Cat Sleep on My Baby's Chest? Introducing Babies to Pets

Posted by Karen Murphy

dog eat babyWhen I brought my older daughter home from the hospital for the very first time, I set her carrier down on the floor and then went and got our two cats. They approached her cautiously, as if they thought she was going to explode or spew masticated carrots all over (that part came later). They got a bit closer, sniffing carefully. Then she began to cry, and they freaked. What was this...THING that sounded like another cat but clearly wasn't one?

I never knew until then that newborn babies sound like cats. Actually, they make quite a variety of unnerving sounds, which if they freak you out, imagine what they do to your pets.

Which is why you should read these tips about introducing your new baby to your pets

And then maybe you won't end up with cats sleeping in your baby's crib, sleeping on her chest and sucking out her breath, the way I did. (And dogs eat babies, don't they? I suggest maybe a new chew toy then before the baby comes home)(Kidding)(Kind of. Not a dog person.)(But have a look at the photo if you don't believe me.)
