I've actually been struggling with this for years: how and where do you find nice clothes for kids, especially girls, that don't turn them into pint-sized Lolitas? And when they are actually Lolita-age, what then? I dread my 7-year-old daughter Serena growing up, because since I'm not handy with a needle the way Mike is I have to rely on store-bought clothes to cover her in 1.) comfort, 2.) a bit of style, without 3.) exposing her navel.
Emily Yoffe at Slate had the same problem, and details the good, the bad, and the oh-so-ugly from a marathon shopping expedition with her 11-year-old daughter. Their verdict? Department stores seemed to yield the best results.
Here's what I have to add:
1. Raid an older sibling's closet. Serena wears some of her brother's hand-me-downs.
2. Thrift stores aren't very trendy and therefore can yield some treasures.
3. Organic clothes tend to be lower on the skank-meter.
4. Oddly, discount stores like Target often have some fairly plain and modest selections.
Please add your experiences; perhaps together we can fight this disturbing trend to sexualize our daughters!
