Bad Bad Mommy: Elizabeth Edwards' Smack Down

A Silicon Valley Moms blogger had the grave misfortune to imply that Elizabeth Edwards is a terrible mother for taking her kids along on the campaign trail (John Edwards for President!!).

In addition to slamming the Edwards clan for their 28,000 square foot pleasure palace (earned by "ambulance chasing"),  Ms. Edwards is called out for dragging her kids along on the campaign trail even though they don't want to go (insert whine).

Elizabeth Edwards doesn't leave self-defense to PR hacks.  She responds directly in the comments so articulately the angels of well-spoken mamas everywhere are singing. Here is a portion of her response:

I want to be entirely clear. You don't get to say I am a terrible mother because you think you wouldn't make my choices in my situation. You don't get to say that my children don't want to be with us when you don't know them and when, parenthetically, you know that happy children can be periodically disagreeable.

Take that, you mother criticizers!

Damn!  I give EE credit for being blog savvy.  I knew she attended Blog Her, but damn, you don't expect her to pop up in a remote part of the blogosphere.

As for the issue, I dunno, I can't blame the blogger who assailed EE for being cynical about the Edwards' motives. Not because they're bad people, but because all politicians are bad people. I mean, the idea that the kids are some sort of prop is not unique - politicians do it all the time.  Are the Edwards different?  Who knows.  I'm cynical. For good reason.

As for the indignation expressed by EE, again, I dunno.  At a certain point, didn't she open the door to judgement when she talked about Clintons "choices"?

EE is not only blog savvy but articulate and speaks her mind! I only hope they don't start interviewing kids at school to get their opinion of what they think about school. Now that would be some juicy reporting.

and yet if the kids weren't on the campaign trail with mom and pop there would be a whole different set of judgements...

Regandbabe brings up a good point.  EE -- like all mothers really -- is damned if she does, damned if she doesn't.  I say kudos to her for her response.  I think it is a response we could all use from time to time when people (inevitably) criticize our decisions as mothers.

So is the critical blogger person a parent or not?  That's what I want to know.

Yes the critical blogger *is* a parent..  a mama even.. that's why it's sorta tough to imagine why all the hate

I wish EE would run for Prez.  I would so vote for her!

And yeah, I was thinking the "damned if she does..." argument as well.

I don't live in SV, in fact I live in Austin, Texas. I don't come from money or have money. I am a very hard working single mother and am damn proud of that. I was so intrigued by the story on GMA this morning about E. Edwards that I registered with this site just to make a comment. First of all, HATS off to Mrs. Edwards for what she is doing. Not that it is anyone's business regardless of their public life. So what if they are rich??? Have a big house, chased ambulances??? I wish I would have had an attorney like that when I got screwed in my car accident! It was worked for.

My point is this, this woman may be dying (things can always change) and she has chosen to be with her family, regardless what they do, they are together. Those kids will always remember that. We are not in their shoes and does anybody HONESTLY know what they would do if they were??? Seriously, think about that. They seem to have made their decisions TOGETHER, as a family. The initial comments made were nasty and mean. What's it to ya!
