Things Fall Apart: NettoCollection Cribs Recalled

Posted by Karen Murphy

nettocollection crib recallIn the maelstrom of the media-whipped frenzy that the recent toy recalls have become, we forget about how the recall system has worked in the past, how it operated until this whole thing got so far out of hand and we began to feel that manufacturers were playing fast and loose with our safety and our good will.

Not so. We have forgotten that the majority of recalls of products that affect our kids are voluntary, made by the manufacturer who is desperately trying to make things right and protect us, the consumer, not out of fear of reprisal but simply because it's the right thing to do.

NettoCollection is recalling two of its cribs, the "Moderne" (model #NC-136) and the "Loft" (model #NC-140) because there's a possibility the side rail spindles can separate from the top rail, causing a strangulation and entrapment hazard. Only these model numbers, with production date codes of 09/03 and 02/04 (model number and production date code information is printed on a label on the crib end panels) are included in the recall, totaling about 400 cribs.

If your crib is affected, you can contact the NettoCollection  toll-free at 800.996.3886 or via their website.

Wow, you softened us up so much on this recall, you'd think the guy behind the NettoCollection wrote for Babble.

There are recalls and there are recalls.

If we find things out about four-year-old product that we can make better and upgrade, a recall is the best and swiftest way to find those customers. If there is a short-term public relations disadvantage to this action I don't care, and I don't think anyone who frets about that belongs in this business, and I don't care how much it costs me either. That is what we are doing because it is the right thing to do, because this company is about build quality--and safety--above design or anything else. If I take a few knocks from a cynic or two that is worth it to me.

And thank you for noticing that I write for Babble.

I read about this and got chills up my spine. One million cribs recalled...entrapment...three babies dead. The recall was announced yesterday by the CPSC, two years after a California lawyer alerted them when a nine-month old baby died in a faulty crib
