Mean Teachers Beget Slutty Kids

Posted by Madeline Holler

This might explain the whole Catholic schoolgirl thing. According to a recent study, there is a direct link between teacher verbal abuse and early onset of sexual intercourse.

Mother of God, those sharp-tongued Sisters of Mercy are causing more than bruised knuckles!

Canadian researchers were looking for a link between peer rejection and teacher verbal abuse when they came up with these findings. They tracked 312 grade-school kids, assessing them from Kindergarten through fourth grade for teacher verbal abuse, peer rejection and antisocial behavior. Then in the seventh grade, the same subjects were assessed for self-esteem and sexual activity.

What they found was, especially among girls, a direct link between the teacher verbal abuse and early onset of sexual intercourse. The verbal abuse is indirectly linked to delinquent behavior.

The article doesn’t say what the verbal abuse was exactly, nor did it say how frequently it was unleashed on those kids whose lives would be quite different in a matter of a few years. Were these kids repeatedly degraded in front of their peers or would a single incident drive them to promiscuity in middle school?

What do you think? Does your second-grader have a mean teacher? Did reading this just explain the first 20 years of your life?

That's weird. Usually all the slutty girls I knew had really relaxed parents who weren't around or just didn't care.

I guess it was really the teachers that pushed them over...

That seems absurd to me.  I'm sure having a teacher bitch you out doesn't help, but in 7th grade, I didn't think "OK! I'm going to go out and have sex because Mrs. Rodgers yelled at me for talking!"  I think they're reaching, here.

Oh, but perhaps it is a bit more subtle than just having a teacher publicly humiliate a young girl.  Perhaps only girls who have self-esteem problems, or parents who also are mean tolerate mean teachers?  Perhaps well-adjusted, well-supported children will seek help from their parents when being mistreated by others.  And, girls who are regularly abused are more likely to look for affection in all the wrong places.  Also, I remember from my school days that teachers often fell into the trap of following peer-status levels in their treatment of students.  That is, popular students were "popular" with teachers and unpopular students were treated poorly....so teacher-treatment was a reflection of peer-treatment.
