Wine OK While Pregnant in UK

Posted by Madeline Holler

Pregnant women, a toast! To the UK's National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and their reasonable guidelines that a small glass of wine everyday won't harm the fetus.

Of course, if you're getting out your scorecards to move booze from the “forbidden” category to the “in small amounts,” write it in pencil. Leaders at the British Department of Health are still pushing for total alcohol abstinence from conception to birth. The two agencies will duke it out and try to come up with definitive guidelines. So, who knows what they’ll say next week and the week after that.

Public health officials, doctors and midwives for the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence said there is no evidence of harm to a fetus from a small glass of wine or a pint of lager daily. These NICE (awwwww) officials said, though, that drinking possibly increases the risk of miscarriage (oh, is THAT all?).

This guideline contradicts the British Department of Health recommendation that women abstain completely from alcohol from conception to birth, saying there is evidence that even small amounts of alcohol could lead to varying degrees of fetal alcohol syndrome and other disorders.

Personally, I didn’t drink during either of my pregnancies. During the first one, I was just trying to be perfect. During the second one, well after I had abandoned perfection, I could barely stay awake as it was. Even a sip would have sent me to bed for yet another nap.

What do you think? Are they more realistic in Great Britain or just in denial? Did you drink much while pregnant? Did you want to drink but abstain out of fear? Evidence? Judgment from others?

I had occaisional sips in my 2nd and 3rd trimesters.  I think some of it is cultural.  I know some European moms who did not completely give up the alcohol and were not banished from their (European) OB's practice.  My family is also European so I know some were given much more lax guidelines re alcohol in general while pregnant and nursing.

The thing is, I think as a society, culture, whatever, we have a tough time with the idea of moderation.  This applies not only to alcohol but also food, exercise, parental self rightiousness, etc.

I agree on the cultural thing. A woman I know who has worked in countries around the world said that in Brazil while pregnant, she had beer everyday - everyone did. And that in Italy, they drink wine. And supposedly everyone survives. I think some of this stuff is just about doctors covering their own butts, per usual.

Totally agree that it's a cultural thing and that American drs may worry about how "moderation" is defined. I don't think an occasional glass of wine is seen as that big a deal even here in Canada. When I was pregnant I abstained totally the first 3 months then enjoyed one glass of red wine a week. When I mentioned this on a message board I was absolutely slaughtered by a group of ladies trying to conceive (one of whom had a weight loss ticker indicating she was more than 120 lbs overweight - like that's not a risk AT ALL).
