Weekly Check-Up: Binge Drinking While Pregnant May Not Be So Harmful

Posted by Kelly Mills

pregnant drinkingIs the end of the careful pregnancy upon us? First we may have the go-ahead to eat some fish. Then we get the green light to wear funny t-shirts. And now a review of the literature on drinking and pregnancy indicates that binge drinking may not be as dire as we've been told. Here: "The results indicated that there was little substantive evidence that binge drinking caused a range of problems, including miscarriage, stillbirth, abnormal birthweight or birth defects, such as fetal alcohol syndrome." Please note they aren't talking about consistent heavy drinking (that's still a big no-no) but rather occasions of having 5 or more alcoholic drinks. In other words, getting tore up every once in a while during pregnancy.

Oh, studies like this usually raise the hackles of many, so let's be sure to include the qualifiers. First, there may still be a possible link, though a small one, between binge drinking and impaired neurodevelopment. The researchers also suggest that the timing of the binge may play a part, and the first 13 weeks of pregnancy are more critical sober times than the remainder of the bun-cooking. (Of course the early weeks are also the time when women are least likely to know they are pregnant.)

Now, I'll confess that I don't drink at all, so the pregnancy sobriety wasn't an issue for me. But I am curious whether women did imbibe even to the point of "binging" during pregnancy. Is this something that goes on but nobody wants to talk about? And would this study change anyone's behavior?

I dunno being hung-over and pregnant?? That would be really REALLY awful.

I wouldn't drink during pregnancy simply because the sight and smell of alcohol makes me nautious.

I just have to add that this news makes me feel much better about the drinking I did before I knew I was pregnant.

It took me 3 months to figure out I was pregnant (duh) and I drank about 3 or 4 times. Never got drunk but had a few glasses of wine or a couple of beers. I freaked out but then realized that in a lot of countries having a glass of wine will pregnant is the norm. North America is too crazy with this stuff.

BTW: My babe is 6 months old now and totally fine!

Next week there will probably be a study showing that binge drinking while pregnant has dire effects.  So for me, it was a no-brainer.  I don't drink all that much anyway and I haven't been really drunk in a long time.  Unless you're suffering from alcoholism, is it really that difficult to forgo booze for 9 months?  Sorry if I sound judgemental, but my best friend's sister just gave birth to a severely handicapped baby and drank heavily while she was pregnant.

5 drinks... holy crap!  Really, why would they even conduct a study like this?  Do people really need to be told that drinking during pregnancy might be OK?  It might not be, so why risk it?  While I guess having a half a glass of wine or beer might not effect a growing fetus, what could 5 drinks do.  If I had 5 drinks in one evening I would be out for the count and people would probably have some interesting photos of me.  If 5 drinks would do that to me, I shudder to think about what  that would be doing to a child in the womb.

Yeah... and did you know that one round of Russian Roulette is 83.3% safe?

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is real, has occurred with episodic (not daily) binge drinking, and is a terribly sad, preventable outcome.
