Yes, I Was Totally a Choir Geek, Why Do You Ask?

Posted by Karen Murphy

Yeah, so maybe this stuff is only interesting to people like me who actually sang this sort of thing in front of audiences and all, but my kids liked it too. More than once. So there. So if you're not completely sick of Christmas music yet, have a look at Straight No Chaser, the men's choir group from Indiana University, and do stick with it past the first minute; you'll thank me.

Or, maybe only a choir geek would appreciate it, I don't know. You tell me. But I think they rock.

These guys were Celebs when I was a student at IU.  They were awesome- packed, sold out crowds, amazing CD sales.  Then a minor scandal when one of the memembers stole the money and ran.  It was sad.  They were so fun to see live and they were supported well by the students.  You would have thought they were a group of Brad Pitts with the way the girls treated them.

I grew up in a small town not long after WWII, where travel was limited to the distance from our house to the school or the church.  Participating in the church and school choirs was something to do.

But singing becomes a habit after awhile, so I grew up singing to myself, and then later I sang to my daughters when they were little.  It made me feel closer to them.

But my ex-wife always had a comment or criticism to make about the way I sang or the words I used, so after a few years of marriage I quit singing altogether.

Now that I'm alone, I wish I had continued anyway, because my voice can't hold a tune anymore.  But I still love the old choir music, so I try.
