Babble Talk: My Body, My Pump

Posted by editors

Kate Tuttle writes about her experience as an exclusive breast feeder, albeit with the bottle in Breast-Free Breastfeeding. Judging by the comments from all of you, this happy medium of pumping exclusively does seem to make a lot of you, well, happy. Whether you’re a breast or formula kind of gal the reigning sentiment seems to be, whatever works for you sister! However, Tuttle’s piece also struck a nerve on the topic of hyper-sexualizing breasts in our society. Inevitable? Or manageable? And a few commentators shared your ‘extreme pumping’ stories for our entertainment. Apparently some of you are not letting a little thing like pumping get in the way of road trips to Coachella. Impressive ladies. Very impressive. - April Peveteaux

When our son was born 4 years ago, my wife decided to pump instead of breastfeed.  These were the benefits for us:

1. I was able to do most of the feedings (allowing her to get some much needed sleep).

2. Much cheaper than formula.  Don't babies cost enough as it is?

This method won't work for everyone, but I am really glad I got to be so involved in my son's early life.  When our next child arrives I hope she decides to pump again.

Unfortunately, the pump is not as efficient at getting the milk out and stimulating the creating of new milk as the baby is.  In addition, moms who breast feed "breast free" are missing out on a lot of the other benefits of breastfeeding.  However, if it's pump vs. formula, well, anything that gets breast milk into babies is, IMHO, a good thing.

Still, I wouldn't encourage new moms to do this without trying traditional breastfeeding first.

I got really creeped out when I read she though of her breast as strictly sex organ.  Does that mean she had to have a c-section cause her vagina is strictly for sex?  I thought that the female body had evolved for procreation AND child birth.  Boobs are for feeding babies period.  They are not "sex organs".
