Huffing and Puffing and Blowing Your Common Sense Down

Posted by makeitadouble

Which one of the following recent PC-driven revisions to classic children’s stories and nursery rhymes is true: A rewrite of the Three Little Pigs called The Three Cowboy Builders being called offensive to Muslims and insulting to builders, Baa Baa Black Sheep being changed to Baa Baa Rainbow Sheep to satisfy race relations, the “Seven Dwarfs” removed from the title of Snow White to avoid offending the vertically challenged or the ending of Humpty Dumpty being rewritten to avoid upsetting sensitive children?

Trick Question, they’re all true.

A 3-D Educational Book based on the nursery rhyme The Three Little Pigs - called The Three Cowboy Builders (the cowboys are still pigs) – was criticized by Becta, England’s education technology agency, because the use of pigs could be offensive to Muslims and the story stereotypes builders. The condemnation of the Award winning interactive book occurred during the judging of entries at the annual BETT Awards, a ceremony designed to honor the best educational stories, programs and teaching aids for children.

Becta judges said that whereas the retelling of a story was acceptable, the story should not single-out and alienate sections of the workforce then added that builders should be positive role models for children. "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?" the judges asked.

Is there no end to this absurd hypersensitive politically correct bullshit? Even the head of education at the Muslim Council of Britain, said: “We are not offended by (the book) at all.” This isn’t the same as Disney’s intentional racially and ethnically insensitive characters (see Metrodad’s post on Cinderella Dolls & the Disney Industrial Complex) we’re talking about cowboy pigs building houses. Come on, lighten up people.

Where’s the story about how Hindus may be offended by the similarities between Babar the Elephant and their sacred deity Ganesha and Jack’s blasphemous selling of a sacred cow for magic beans? Will Clifford from here on in be the Big Rainbow Dog to avoid racial tension with American Indians or will that be an affront to Gay Pride? Will contestants from The Biggest Loser speak out against The Very Hungry Caterpillar because of the way it misrepresents the eating habits of the overweight?

They’re just harmless kids books and they’re for reading, not for reading into.

It was actually mentioned in the article about the 3 cowboy pigs. It is sad, over-reactive and sad. But great material...

Except, of course, that 5 minutes' research would have shown that at least one of the examples you give is not true.  And another is being hugely misrepresented.

Baa Baa Black Sheep has never been changed because of race relations.  The story has run intermittently since 1986, and none of the reports have turned out to be true.  The charity which runs the playgroups referred to, Parents and Children Together, said: "children at the two family centres sing a variety of descriptive words in the nursery rhyme to turn the song into an action rhyme. They sing happy, sad, bouncing, hopping, pink, blue, black and white sheep etc. This encourages the children to extend their vocabulary."

The 'Three Little Cowboy Builders' was not rewritten because it was offensive to Muslims, and to suggest so is to misrepresent the article to which you link.  A book, 'Three Little Cowboy Builders' was submitted for a prize.  It failed to win the prize.  It has not been rewritten.  Of the seven concerns the judges had which prevented it winning, one concerned Muslims.  Even the quotation you use suggest that the judges were more concerned about offending builders than anyone else.

Would it be too much to expect a rewrite of the fairy tale you have concocted above (admittedly because you made the mistake of believing that The Telegraph would do its research)?

Nate: The time I was going to use explaining to you how wrong you are, I'll instead use to write another post without doing any research. Thanks for reading.

About makeitadouble

I'm a pretend-to-work-at-work-dad trying to become a pretend-to-work-at-home-dad. I am also the father of two boys, one who refuses to sleep and one who refuses to eat, and the husband of one exceptionally tolerant woman. We all share their house in upstate New York with an 11 year old, bowlegged, chain smoking, narcoleptic housecat and an imaginary leprechaun named King Brian. My penchant for obscure pop culture references, self-flagellation and an unhealthy obsession with his Microsoft Word Thesaurus plug-in make my posts practically unreadable at times. My claims to fame include once performing an emergency Brazilian with a glow stick, a Sugar Daddy and fabric swatches, being named to the 2003 Top 10 Most Butte-tiful People of Montana List and writing an episode of Lost, all of which are completely untrue. I write about all this and more at my blog Make it a Double. I've got a heavy pour and you can't beat the prices.
